| MALC | Date: 27/04/02 Venue: Kilworth Sticks (Curans Pool) Time: 3pm till 7.30pm Got asked last night if i could help a friend out with some tips and advice on fishing the meat so me being me said no prob and we sorted out to go to Kilworth Sticks nr Rugby. Kilworth Sticks has 3 pools open for fishing with 2 more just being built and stocked at the moment which are due to open for the summer. My mate was going to get there before me and he was to choose the pool and swims which he duely did. He arrived at 11am and chose to fish Curans Pool peg 28 opposite a reed bed at 13mtr, which would be a good guide as to how my way with meat would work as i'd never fished this pool before. Before i arrived he'd caught 4 small carp about 12oz each on cubed meat over riddled meat and corn feed. After sitting behind him for half hour watching what he was doing and offering some pointers regards feeding and hooking meat i went and set up. I sat on peg 27 which had reed mace on the edge of the island at 13mtr and on the inside. I had a depth of 3ft tight to the clump of mace at 13mtr and the same depth on the inside line 4mtrs down to the right. So i could use the same rig for each swim which was a 0.20gr carbon stemmed float with 2x8 shot set at half depth on 0.10mm line tied to a 16 animal hook and attached to a 14 lacy. I fed half pot of riddled meat and 2mm trout pellets on each line then started on the far line. First put in with 2 pellets of 3mm meat produced a pastie carp of about 12oz which was followed next put in with it's twin. Then the wind got up and with me only being a bag of bones i could not hold the pole there so moved to the inside swim. First put in on the inside produced a mirror carp about 4lb which meant in five put in's i had about 51/2lb in the net. After 3 more smaller carp i had a rudd so in went another half pot of meat and pellets which straight away resulted in a couple more carp around the lb mark. Whilst fishing as the platforms were only about 10mtr apart i was coaxing my mate as to how and when to feed and other little tips which resulted in him weighing in 111/2lb and gaining a bit of helpfull advice with how i fish the meat. A few other anglers were fishing on the opposite side of the island and only caught a couple of small carp each on either maggot or corn. I ended with 1 Tench,2 Rudd and 9 Carp for 171/2lb and only used about a third of a tin of meat and an egg cup of 2mm trout pellets so was quite happy with the short session and it also proved that my meat attack works at another venue. And my mate went away with a new way of fishing and feeding the meat. Malc Fish with Friends @ MaggotDrowning.com |

| Dai Fish | Hi all, Ray nice report even if the weather was not the best, after watching your method for fishing at your toes at Isac Waltons I have been trying it with some good results, I had never considered fishing that close in so thanks for the tip. Malc nice report, whilst fishing a method that I have been unable to master, I have tried many times to fish with meat but with no sucsess either the meat comes off when I cast or I do not get any bites so may be you could show me one day. Thanks to both of you for taking the time to do these reports, please keep up the good work Dai Fish |
| martin. | hi all firstly thanks dave for splitting topic secondly malc did you forget to include trevs posts thats 6hrs on there own but well worth it. im trying your method with meat today at virginia lakes in a match so will post later. ray & malc good reports keep em coming tight lines. martin. |
| norm | NOWERE for the first sunday in ages i did not go fishing. instead me and tomma went to semer. to see the farmer, and it was blowing a absolute gale, totally unfishable, every one was packing up when we arrived, they said it was a bite every cast but were unable to sit in such strong wind and rain, and i dont blame them it must have been very windy as it blew a cup of tea out of tommas hand all over him and the carseat it isn`t the size of the tiddler that counts |
| martin. | hi today i fished a small 26 peg open on virginia lake it holds a good head of carp, roach, rudd, golden rudd, tench & some bream & chub i decided to do one of malcs suggestions with meat so i put 2 tins of bacongrill through a maggot riddle exept 2 slices in case i wanted larger hook bait i also took maggots& caster with me wel i drew a peg with an island feature but it was 14,5m to island& the hot peg was the other side towards the piont any way there was no way of holding a pole at this range today so iset up a mea line at 7 mts on pole & a wagler to the island well started on wag & had 6 small rudd in first hour switched to pole & had 3 small carp to 2lb then apart from the odd roach & rudd i just sat there with the wind & rain in my face till the final call any way i wieghed in just under 10lb & cme about 12 from 26 it was one with 31lb from other side of island 30lb 2nd 25lb 3rd any way i put it down to weather & despite my result found method was o/k im fishing another on tue eve at button hole so will try this method again ifany one is interested in knowing more about virginia lake it is in the AT this week with bob nudd doing his feature with one of my friends ray malley. tight lines. martin. |
| keith | Rolfs lake. fished peg 6( not a noted area) fished expander pellet at 11 m as the wind was strong and blowing the pole all over the place. Also put some catmeat in at peg 5 as the peg was empty and was told if you are going to catch good chance it would be there later in the day. Not a lot happened on the 11m line with the expander pellet kept plugging away though as it can just switch on.but after 3 hours it was time for a look on the catmeat.first put in and the float sailed away.gudgeon followed by another and another not a sign of a carp in sight.back to 11m this time with catmeat on the hook and guess what.Carp and then another.then gudgeon and small chublets. Only two carp for my efforts but i am booked in again for next sunday so will fish the meat from the off next time. 158lb won with 154lb second off the flyer pegs.and not a ripple in sight all day long. |
| MALC | Date: 28/04/02 Venue: Stockton Reservoir Time: 9.30am till 3.00pm Todays was going to be a practise session on the Bagging Waggler with my traveling partner Steve Wilson (yes Steve now all the MD's know who you are). But with the wind blowing a gale, waves upto a foot high and blistering rain it turned out to be a day on the feeder instead. Steve arrived at 8.00am as planned (he's never late unlike me i'm always late) but we never left till about half past due to chattering and a cuppa coffee as it was not a match (for a change) there was no rush. We arrived at the Res at 8.45 and had a walk around to see if anywhere was sheltered from the wind. The far end was the only sheltered bit but as there were already 8 anglers there and none of them had any bites we walked back to the car and said sod it we'll go by the books and fish in the wind. I told Steve to pick the pegs then it would be his fault if we done no good, so he chose peg 57 (so the wind was from right to left into our bank) and i sat on 58 so that i would not have to watch Steve bagging all day. Normally at this time of year he slaughters me when we go on a practise/pleasure session (and today was no different). I fished a semi fixed frame feeder on 6lb maxima with a 10" hook length of 0.16 to a size 16 animal hook with either pellet or meat on the hair. Steve fished 10lb mainline (he's an animal) with a korum flat method feeder to a pre tied hair rig with a 14 hook (middy i think) with pellet as hook bait. Steve had the better day of us both hooking 11 carp but pulling out of 5 and landing 6 with the smallest going about a lb and the best one about 8lb plus 1 chub for a total weight of about 25lb. Me, well i had 2 carp 1 about 1lb and the other about 9lb plus 1 chub and lost 3 more carp to end the day with about 11lb. Needless to say i got loads of stick during the day as we are always giving each other verbal when were together. But there's always next week for revenge. Ray, Good report we had your wind today. Dai, If you want we can sort some thing out after Drayton regards a day on the meat. Toma, I tend to use 4 different type's of meat but mainly Chira Bacon Grill. Martin, Good report the weather was against you though. Malc Fish with Friends @ MaggotDrowning.com |
| toma | Good reports lads. Martin shame about the weather, good result considering the conditions, keep at it Martin Keith pity about the un-noted peg but you cought never the less, well done mate, 158 and 154lbs WOW that is a bag, any chance of a fishin on the lake??????????. I will gladly have some of that weight Cya all later Andy i'm going fishing |
| Trogg | Hi Lads Thanks for taking the time to sit & fish ![]() |
| peter | Old Bury Hill Fishery. Milton Lake. Peg 17. First club match of the new season and first Round of the club Knockout Cup. Peg 17 is about as far away from the "Flyers" as it's possible to get,but in the last couple of weeks the fish have started to respond to corn or meat fished over pellet,so that was to be the plan of attack today. The wind was already pretty strong and blowing from my right to left, with the promise of it getting stronger later. Knowing that i had no more than 4 ft of water in front i set up a Drennan .8gm Lake on .12 matchtec with a .10 matchtec hooklength and a size 16 Preston PR22 hook.(This hook has quite an unusual shape, with a pronounced swept shank that i find ideal for meat and corn, and has great holding power)The other was just a dibber on .12 straight through and the same pattern hook. I had started at 6 mtrs as i didn't want to feed to a spot that i wouldn't be able to reach later.A couple of pots of "Swim Stim" 3mm pellets, corn & meat in front & one against the marginal reeds to my left was the initial feed. The first couple of hours produced just a couple of skimmers as the wind got steadily worse and showers came and went.People all around were having to alter their lines as the wind increased while i was able to stay on my chosen line. Meat produced not one bite while maggot only resulted in micro-rudd. So onward with the corn ( a bait i always have confidence in) and with an hour and a half to go,the float buries and a lovely Crucian of about 1lb is in the net.Two more follow then 3 Tench, the best about 3lbs.Another couple of Crucians and a Bream of about 3lb are added before the final whistle. All the fish came from the 6mtr line with not a bite in the margin swim. At the weigh-in it's persisting down and the wind is so strong that it is difficult to read the scales. The pegs either side of me weigh in 8lbs 10ozs ans 2lbs 8 ozs.I weigh in a level 16 lbs to finish 5th. It's enough to get me through to the next round of the Knockout and gives me 6 points towards the club championship. Well 1 down 16 to go. The next match is at Gold Valley on Syndicate Lake in 2 weeks time,I'll keep you posted. Peter. Make Friends,Go Maggotdrowning. |
| Dai Fish | Hi all the speed that the reports and replys are comeing now we will soon need part three. Keith nice report shame about the wind theres not a lot you can do when its like that and needing over 158lb to win well I can only dream of weights like that lol. Malc sounds like you had a blast even if he did beat you I love it when theres banter on the bank I hate to take things to seriously. yes please to the tutorial at Drayton. Trogg if you are still blanking on these reports you will have to do what you do when you want to have a photo with a fish let Dian read the reports as she is the only one in your house that can catch on the bank maybe she wont blank on the reports lol Dai Fish |
| Adam S | Hello all well done on the catches , and the reports. is this the famous 10lbs carp everywhere drayton resevoir you are all going to,if so im jealous, bream can get soo tedious and the tench are not really on yet, im stuck in the twilight zone between the pike and tench seasons!! old bury hill fishery looks lovely. report: sunday 28th april 2002 venue:liffey resevoir,co.kildare,ireland. mehtod:slider float bait:maggots.casters, hemp, sensas match blend and brown crumb what a horrible run of weather in the last few days, today was just the same, i had planned to fish the river liffey proper but it was just too high and coloured so i settled for the resevoir . I fished from the "pier" which is actually the top of a partailly sunken boat house built before the resevoir was flooded.I was fishing into 14 feet of water a rod lenght out , i was tempted to fish pole to hand but it was too windy to be comfortable and the undertow wasnt too bad so i settled for slider float. i set up a 3AA bodied waggler,2lbs hooklenght and 18 hook.put in four balls of ground bait and fed hemp, casters and mags over the top.The resevoir was a nice colour due to the flooded river, fished for about 4 hours for 6lbs of roach and skimmers to about 6ozs and one tail walking brownie of about 1lbs 4oz.most fish took on the bottom or in the last feet over water.hooked one better fish probably a bream, but i lost it without seeing it.got fed up at 4 o`clock with the rain pouring down and i left, cold but satisfied.ill be back to prebait and fish a week session in july. here are a few pics from previous reports that i only got a chance to scan on tonight. This is from a few days ago 17th of april,it rained all day.sorry its a bad pic but the rain was so heavy the camera picked it up and wouldnt focus well.About 50lbs or so of mainly bream and hybrids. This is from good friday, part of a similar bag again of bream and hybrids mainly, but hurrah theres a tench in there too. Finally this is the river liffey just above where it flows into the resevoir, pic is from last summer. again i hope the pics are not too big. Good luck all ADAM |
| Ziptrev | Thanks Adam, Another good 1, Makes you think when you see NEWTS post! Our small Country's even share bad weather! The scale of things is such a contrast. Great Pics for viewing , (dont know what the download will do when full lol sorry Dave) The River Liffey hey! legendary Guinness water! C U Soon Trev Ziptrev Shouldn't happen to a DOG! |
| Adam S | Hello yeah good guiness water, in fact the very first pint of guiness ever brewed was brewed in my home town , and only about 20 other towns in ireland lay claim to that one,but i know ours is the legit claim it says it on the welcome sign outside the village, and they never lie.lol ADAM |
| MALC | Keith, Glad to see you made it to Rolfs but i think you'll have to nobble Kev before sunday as he seems to be on a roll at the minute what with Rolfs before WA and now back at Rolfs. I'll put money on him for the summer. Peter, Keep it up the season's got a long way to go. Adam, Nothing wrong with the pictures mate except they make me envious, i'm surrounded by Carp bagging waters but miss the Bream & Roach fishing that your so lucky to have over there. Yes Adam thats the Same Drayton were at on the 20th Malc Fish with Friends @ MaggotDrowning.com |

Great reports lads Andy i'm going fishing |
| Ray Owen | Hi all, Duty newcommer ere. Well gents i have just read all part one and also part 2 and just in case u are intrested it took 127 mins or in welsh 2hrs 7mins. What can u say ! If all what i just read was in paper back it would cost u a few pound i bet. I have been fishing for 30 yrs+ and i have just scribbled down 2 sides of A4 paper in tips with out naming names that was the best read i have had in ages. I hope i can add to it in the new season ( I do not fish the closed season ) and pass on some of the methods i use in the hope they could help somebody else. Once again tks to u all tight lines Ray |
| Adam S | Hello all toma, well done mate thats a big tench by irish standards, despite the rumours of 10lbs fish they just havent materialised and the record remains 8.15lbs. so any tench over 7lbs is a real cracker from anywhere in ireland. ADAM |
| Newt | quote:Ray - it was nice of you to translate the 127 minutes into hours and minutes. However, you should know that for some folks on here, you need to go a step farther. For any who are still confused about the time thing, that means that Mickey's short arm has moved past 2 big marks (the ones with numbers) and his long arm has moved past an additional 1 big and 2 more little marks. Toma - did that help? |

| MALC | Date: 1/05/02 Venue: Borough Hill Time: 6pm till 8.30pm (evening open) I know it's a day late but the computer crashed on me last night. I'll follow Peters lead on this one from now on and put match details on Match Reports section and my own report on this section (good idea Peter). |
| Ziptrev | Tydd St. Giles 1/5/02 To some the unrelieved flatness of the East Anglian landscape is boring! To others, awesome, conjuring pictures of Dickensian Britain, with the mists surrounding Copperfield on the Yarmouth Flats. To our Northerners and Welsh, incomprehensible that the eye can see so far, without bumping in to hills and mountains! At 4.15 am on Wednesday morning, I left my Suffolk resting place and set off, through a thankfully dry dawn to meet again with Martin at his express invitation to fish on the opening day of a new Lake. My own delight in the Landscape, because although Suffolk, my birthplace is totally different, being of the ‘rolling hills’ landscape, the ruggedness of Fen Country always fills me with the sense of mystery, smugglers tales and harshness! However, flat land leads to unrelieved wind! My fear was that the continuous, never ceasing, nothing to hide behind wind, would ruin Martins day! Arriving at about 5.40 am, I stopped to take this picture over a Drain as you arrive at Tydd Gote1 In this area, villages are lonely and huddle together in clusters, so from the A17, you pass the Terringtons in Norfolk (Terrington St.Clements, Terrington St.John, Terrington Marsh) Go through the Walpole’s (St Peter, St.Andrew, Cross keys and Island) and then turning left after Sutton Bridge (Not Long Sutton, or Sutton St. James, Sutton St.Edmund, or even Sutton Crosses!} and you then come to the Tydds (Gote, St.Giles and St.Mary) Where one starts and the other leaves off, or for that matter, where Norfolk ends and Lincolnshire begins, I was unable to discover and Cambridgeshire looms closely at this junction as well! When I realised that the next village to Tydd St.Giles is Newton! I thought of next week and my US friend and decided that as I had arrived, I could worry about boundaries some other time. Martin and I quickly made contact, met, exchanged warm greetings and drove into the Car Park of an extremely well appointed Golf and Leisure Complex, that is less than 3 years old, maturing well and expanding into the venture that interests us, namely Angling. I will not re-iterate the stock of fish; locations etc. as Martin has already ably highlighted these under his new lake topic, so let me describe our day. Firstly, Martin had a Companion in young Phil. A cracking lad and good naturedly enduring the wisecracks that Martin supplied in a constant stream, which kept me amused all day! I’m sure Phil wont mind if I explain that in his short life, he has faced personal tragedy in having a disabled Mother and recently losing his Father. I felt a particular pride in being Martin’s friend and seeing the caring relationship he has offered to Phil in the lads adversity and you can seethe bond the have forged! You’ll meet Phil at Semmer, and I know you will take to his cheerful, friendly nature as I did. Well, I’ve got to say that haven’t I, Here’s the kind lad lugging my kit to the Lakeside! (I am carrying my landing net again Dave! And Ray, the Trolley was much appreciated! Here’s a view of the Lake I dropped on to peg 4, with Phil on my right at 3 and Martin on my left at 6. An island faced us some 25-30 metres away. All the 30 pegs had new platforms installed 2 or 3 days ago, extremely nice pegs. The first 17 are also screen protected from the errant golfers! Just as well, as more than 1 ball arrived in the lake whilst we were there and balls could be clearly seen on the Island! We strolled up to the far end of the Lake, as fishing is only allowed this side, because of the danger from the golf balls and at 4 ½ acres, there is plenty of bank! Here's a view looking back from the top end The platforms were new, but the fish even newer, as many had only arrived yesterday, so we discussed methods and decided that it would be hard as the fish were all pellet fed and one of the bans? Yes, you’ve guessed it! Pellets! The fish must 1st be made familiar with Anglers permitted baits, before we can expect good catches. We all started on the Pole, fishing light rigs in about 7’ of water, with single or double Pinkie as hook bait. The wind proved to be a problem to me almost immediately, but fishing from before 8.oo am, I persevered until about 9.30, before I brought out the Sidewinder Rig on my 13’ carp waggler rod, in conjunction with a small pinkie swimfeeder, a 2lb bottom and a 20 hook. Martin was by now trying riddled meat feed, also a 2lb bottom and a 22 hook! As some 30,000 small koi and other carp had been introduced, I thought the meat approach a good idea, but decided to see Martin results Meeting weed several times on retrieval, I had a play and using a minute half of a black coloured foam ball, I popped up a single red maggot on a 6” hook length, which worked perfectly in the shallows. The water temperature had dropped to 52 degs with the influx of rain we had received over the past 2 days. Martin by 10.00, had reverted to a closer line, double orange Pinkie and it worked! Almost exactly on the hour, his float dipped and he was in to a Carp, that I am sure weighed 3lb +, but for which he claimed 2! Carefully playing the fish in on light tackle, we were amazed to see the hooked fish accompanied in (and out again when it ran) by 3 other carp! Here’s the 1st Fish ever caught on Tydd St. Giles Fishery! Look at that Grin! Did ever a man enjoy fishing more! On returning to my peg, we discovered that my popped up Red Maggot had been nipped! My only bite and I was witnessing the capture by Martin! An Angler who had taken peg 1, hooked and lost a carp, another on 8 or 9 had no bites and Phil, who had 2 bites early on, found that they had dried up completely. The wind did ease in the afternoon, but I begged Martins meat, as he had reverted to maggots and flavoured it with Raspberry essence on a cage feeder. (This is the only way ground bait may be used) Very quiet fishing, but 100 stories, revolving around Sammy, (Martins daughter), Phil in matches, the local club scene and other topics that made for a brilliant day. We discussed a Zander day for the future, a barbell promise I made Martin, MD’s, Drayton, Semmer, all of the fun we were going to share. Martin had a meeting at 7.30, so instead of our planned Fish until 6, away by 7, I suggested in view of the lack of fish, that we packed up early, allowing me to buy Martin a ‘Black one’. To repay his invite and the presentation he had made to me of the Ticket marked No.1, the first ever ticket for the Fishery! It was surprisingly not difficult to get his agreement for a Guinness! but he then said ‘I’m just going to try something’ Picking up a small whip, some 3-4 metres in length, he wandered down to peg1, vacated over 2 hours ago by the Angler who had lost his carp. I carried on breaking down kit, when, within 5 minutes I heard Martin call ‘Phil, bring that net!’ Walking down, this is what I saw Yes! working out that the departing Angler had dumped his unused bait in the margins, Martin had dropped his bait there and successfully hooked this lovely Common We weighed it at 43/4lbs Allowing for the net, Martin claimed 41/2 Phil in the meantime had gleefully grabbed the whip and Martin smiled at me as he came back to his peg. ‘Those big ones will all be gone now ‘he said, ‘but I thought I’d try it!’ When will I start to think like that! Worse was to follow! A cry of glee from Phil as he pulled out a 2” Roach! The big ones may have fled, but at last a small fish co-operated! Which meant ‘I was the only one to blank!!!!! Is this the breaking of the Zippy Curse? Never before have I been to a venue with someone and failed to catch! Always, I have been the one to catch, OR share in a general blank! I hope it’s all over! BUT I doubt it! Worse was again to follow, We all left the venue together and Phil had his own kit, so I had no helpful Slave! The walk back to the Car Park meant that the first pint of Guinness was the most refreshing I had tasted since Ireland and we chatted away happily in the ‘Spikes Bar’ of the club. It was no surprise to find that Phil too drank Guinness! Would Martin not teach him right? Martin had earlier given me the 3 Videos presented to MD’s by Bob Nudd, each individually autographed as follows- For the Maggot Drowners Winners 2002-05-02 All the Best Bob Nudd Thanks Martin, for taking the trouble to ask for these great prizes and support the Fish-in, even though you cannot be there. Such was our craic, that Martin forgot the exact time of his meeting and was suddenly confronted by a Committeeman, who announced that he had just a Quarter of an hour! As Martin had left all his Paperwork at home, it was a case of Hail and Farewell as we departed at a great rate of Knots, with quick thanks and see you at Drayton’s! As I drove through an intense glare from the low sun, heading Westwards and home, I felt sad that the day was over so quick, as the Company was such damn good fun, but I brightened as I thought of Rudyard with John and hopefully Alan on Friday, Dave and Stu on Sunday, my 1st PAD match on Tuesday and then the Big one with Newt, in the U.S. of A Thanks MD’s for making it all possible! Cheers Trev Ziptrev Shouldn't happen to a DOG! Edited by - Ziptrev on 02 May 2002 10:16:42 PM |
| Newt | A short (and very different) trip report here. My wife is off work on Wednesday and Thursday. Since I don't have to start work until 3:30pm, we will often get up early on a Thursday and be on the water at daylight to fish until a little after noon. I was especially anxious to get out today and will again this weekend. Mostly scouting trips in anticipation of Trev's visit. With the weather warming nicely here and the water as well (70ºF - 21.1ºC surface temperature today), the fish are moving about in a strange pattern as some will come shallow to spawn and head back deep while others are just staging into shallower water to get ready for the spawn. Locating them is much trickier than during a steady time like summer-early fall and winter. I was tossing lures for bass and the wife was using crickets and fishing a float rig for mostly bream (the US sort which are sunfish and nothing like your bream). I started out the morning in an area where the lilly pads are starting to grow to the surface and there are just a few patches of open water between masses of pads. Water goes to about 6½ ft deep in the deepest area. Early AM is often great for bass on the surface but not today. I tried two very different colored floating mouse lures but no go. Wife was getting lots of bites but not hooking anything. We moved on and she changed down to a #8 Gamakatsu Octopus Circle hook (which is one of the two patterns a bream won't deep hook with - they are lots like perch for swollowing a hook). I kept 3 rods near to hand with a crank bait on one, a jig and soft plastic body on a second, and a ¼oz spinner bait on the other. Mouse went back into the box until next trip. I picked up a couple of nice bass over the next mile or so of shoreline and the wife boated and released 9 or 10 very small sunfish. Fed at least 3 crickets to bite-offs for each one landed too. They were very small and the #8 was a bit large but it is the smallest size for this particular hook pattern. Wind was blowing quite hard for over here at around 20mph and occasionally up to 30. I was moving with the wind behind so the boat was going fairly fast for fishing but the other choice would have kept us both soaking wet with spray. Finally got to a sheltered spot right behind an berm built to elevate the railroad track. The water changes from around 20ft to nothing over a short distance. I saw lots of bubbling and swirling in a section that is maybe 4-6 feet deep and decided to anchor for a bit. Fish would hopefully bite and at worst we would get a respite from the wind. By this time it was around 09:30 and we had been on the lake for around 2½ hours. At 11:15 Jan said her arms and back were tired from catching so many fish and she was ready to up anchor and move on. And the warmouth (known locally as a goggle eye) I picked up one more bass over the next 30 minutes of trolling and fighting the wind and we decided to head in for lunch and me off to work (where I am now). Trev - I have the spot well marked and hopefully the fish will still be there when you arrive. If not, I'll locate more hot spots between now and then. | Adam S | hello all Report:3rd of may 2002,2pm-9pm venue:royal canal,co.kildare,ireland. weather:sunny spells, heavy showers, cold northerly wind. Well today was a strange day,i had prebaited and raked my chosen swim , in a wide section of the canal (a barge turning circle) beside a big weed bed with a few lilies poking through, and i secretly hoped for a few tench even though my head told me that it was still !! too cold for them to feed in any numbers (in this stretch they usually need a good long warm period to get going). when i arrived there was an english guy called Will fishing near my spot,i know him quite well and he is a good angler, despite this however he had only caught 8 small perch, what was strange about that is that he said he had never had more than one perch in a day on this stretch before (neither had i).hmmm as i set up the first shower of hail hit,so i had to set up the brolly . three minutes later the sun was blazing and i took the brolly down, agggg! this pattern continued all day. i had faith in my prebaiting but the start was not encouraging,i was fishing waggler ( 2AA) six inches overdepth,2lbs hooklenght and 18 hook (my usual float setup for the larger fish on this canal) and i had also set up a seven metre whip.after two hours i had about 1lb of bits on the whip and had pulled out of three good fish on the waggler despite two hook changes.the heavy weed didnt help, and i only had about 3 feet square to fish into (the area i had raked). my big fish line relied on hemp, mags and casters over groundbait (sensas cloud 3000, match blend, and crushed hemp) and i was loose feeding white mags and hemp on my whip line. most of my entertainment came from watching the ducks antics, there was a huge surplus of male mallards and the 8 remaining single males constantly hassled the lone single female wherever she went, she must have flown miles but she couldnt shake them.she even tried to find sanctuary behind my keepnet but to no avail, they had their way with her anyway, poor duck.this along with a male swan attacking the whole group of ducks at intervals kept me entertained as i had my lunch Will had departed and i had the whole stretch to myself as i resumed fishng at 5pm,but the fishing stayed slow with just a couple of 12oz hybrids showing up on the waggler,my whip line had slowed to a crawl and with heavy shower number four pelting down i decided to give it one more hour.an hour later and no change i decided to leave , only to realise there wasnt a train till 7.30,so i rang my father and he said he would pick me up as he passed on his way home from work. i rang him at 6.10 and at about 6.30 my swim went mad, lots of bubbles, swirls and a hybrid between 8oz and 2lbs every cast, how odd i hadnt even fed it in half anf hour coz i was having a prolonged last cast as i slowly packed up. so i got back to fishing, and between 6.30 and 8.45 i had a bite every single cast and about 38lbs of fish in 2 and a bit hours (with a grand total of 3lbs for the four previous hours),no tench though. anyway that was that,i packed up happy but puzzled at 9pm and headed home for a pizza.i hadnt had a sinlge perch, and will who was fishing just across the canal from me had nothing but perch, where did all the hybrids come from, and where had all the bream gone, and why oh why wont the tench hurry up and feed.i gave up wondering about an hour ago,but it was an odd day for this stretch ,i know you might think that the fishing just got better in the evening, but that never happens on this stretch as it usually fishes all day.oh well ,i guess surprises are what make angling great. good luck ADAM |
| Ziptrev | Thanks MALC, Why do you reckon you get so many foul hooked ones there? Are they wary and rolling on the bait first? or sheer numbers and hungry? I,ve never heard of so many foul hooked? Newt, What can I say! Great exciting report anda totally different world! The well known (LOL) Bluegill! Looks a lot like a Perch (similar also to the Warmouth shown as well) How big do they grow? Our Perch are not a bad size at 1lb, Specimen and rare at 3lb and with a new record in the last fortnight of just over 51/2lbs. Lovely fish, positively pre-historic looking. Well, I'm off in 3 hours after our Predators (and then after I've met John and Alan, I'm going fishing for Pike as well LOL) Let you know how I get on and on this 200 acre reservoir, we think we have a fish location problem! God knows how you find them on that Lake? Don't know if you read the last report, but I fished next to the Village of Newton yesterday! Guess it's a little bit older! Closer and Closer to the 9th, and I should remember the 3rd! Its the wifes birthday! Ah well, an incentive to make up for it next year! Cya Trev Ziptrev Shouldn't happen to a DOG! | Ziptrev | Thanks Adam Another fascinating report, this just gets better. We obviously crossed on posting, but I just had to come back and comment! Another day , another Country, another mystery. Thats what makes it so fascinating Like Toma I love fishing me! Please don't ever let me find all the answers! Trev Ziptrev Shouldn't happen to a DOG! |
| Newt | Trev - current records for North Carolina Sunfish lb/oz caught on Bluegill 4/5 Catawba worm Warmouth 1/13 Minnow Redear 4/6 Orange Rooster-tail (aka shellcracker) Perch White 2/15 Strata Spoon Yellow 2/9 Minnow Although we won't likely see any up in that range. Probably all under a pound although I must admit to estimating weights most of the time. Pictures are fine but weights I just don't normally mess with. May while you are here though if you get all inspired and decide to get a nice set of digital scales. Bass - if we get lucky we may get some above 4lbs and maybe above 5. Catfish - depends on how much fishing time for them and how the water thru the dam is doing. Probably up to 5lbs but there are some 50s in the lake. And locating them can be a bit of an issue. That is why I am spending the scouting time before you get here. Newt Vail |
| Geoff P | After 8 days without wetting a line I am definately getting a bit fed up, so thank you roving reporters for your excellent reports. Hopefully after this weekend I will be able to add storys of my escapades to the forum, but until then thank you all. |
| martin. | hi all wel now you know why i let trev do the report he's hell of a lot better than i am at these its an exelant one again trev. Newt the newton trev mentioned is where i live. they seem wierd looking fish to me but it is brill to see things from other lands it seems to bring them closer thanks. malc & adam your both starting to catch up to trevs standard im going to have to improve on my writing at this rate there both interesting & very good reports. these are just part of what makes this THEE site for anglers from allover there is nowhere else you can get such detailed reports. just keep them coming tight lines. martin. |
| MALC | Trev n Newt great reports as normal. Martin once those fish have settled in the lake it'll fish it's head off. I like the idea with the nets regards the wild balls. Years ago fished a lake on a golf course and the only protection we had was the brolly and that did not realy stop them. I'll definatley have to sort a day there in the future. As ever cracking reports and pics. One day i will learn how to put pics on the forum, one day. Excelent reports Andy Andy i'm going fishing |
| Ziptrev | The Zippy Curse Returns after only a day! I was looking forward to what may be the final pure Piking session until the autumn, due to my current schedule of Carp, Match meets, America and the new stretches of rivers and lakes I have obtained. Catching up with the forum after a 3 day trip earlier and talking to other Insomniacs, like Red Leader, meant that, as I set off to Rudyard at 4.15 am, I pondered over the fact that more than 1 hours sleep might have been advisable! Travelling the now familiar road, (well familiarity breeds contempt they say, I was rudely awakened by triggering, not just 1, but 2 Speed trap cameras within a quarter of a mile! Ah! Well, something to look forward to in the future! And conformation that the Zip Curse was still active. I was meeting ESOX and Trogg, but was the first to arrive at 5.10 am and quickly set up my Rod Pod. John and Alan joined me shortly afterwards and I can confirm that John set up his Pike Rods using Bank sticks! (Mind you, he had to lend his pod to Alan! By 6.00. We were all set up using dead baits, fished on the bottom. Mine were a mackerel, a Sprat and a smelt, all flavoured with Archie Braddock’s Pike Magic and dyed red with Van den Eyde Predator. Exchanging the usual craic, we discussed forum topics and I had ordered between us several items from Askari, which I delivered. Nice and early, I had a run on my right hand rod of 3 and struck into this nice Pike! For the weight, (7lbs 12 oz) it fought well, making several determined runs, but was eventually netted by Alan safely. Again, the fish had blindness in one eye, but was in good condition and beautifully marked as I hope this shows. Deeper Orange colours than previous fish I have seen. I think we were all pleased by the early success, but as it was me that caught, several threats were made and not really what you could call thinly veiled LOL However, as time went on, no more runs happened and so I changed baits and re-cast as I was determined to be more pro-active and not sit so long on a bait that was losing scent and attraction. Having changed at around 9.20, I predicted another fish at 10.00! Lo and behold, almost to the minute I had another run, waited, struck and reeled in to find only an empty trace! I had missed the strike. I blame myself, as even at the outset, I was not confident that the soft sprat used was properly hooked! The next to have a run was Alan, but again no connection was made. John, still as ever cheerful, just could not seem to induce a take. As Adam reported yesterday, Duck activity is at a peak! Alan found a constant source of amusement in a pair that simply refused to leave my swim, despite constant encouragement from me in the form of various rocks and a brandished landing net! Every so often, groups of unattached males would descend with harsh cries! Gang bang the unfortunate Duck, despite the best efforts of her Drake and then fly off again! As Trogg said ‘She’s spent more time with her head under water than above’ due to the various Drakes clambering on her back! Nature can be very cruel. (Or kind, as she seemed none the worse and certainly wouldn’t leave!) Here the pests are! 12.30 came and again I checked and rebaited all 3 rods Alan prepared his usual great fry up, Sausages, Bacon, Eggs and Beans, really a handy man to have around! Unfortunately, with a tooth extraction less than 24 hours ago, on anti-biotics to add to the other damn tablets and being tired, I really couldn’t do justice to this treat! Sorry mate! But the effort was appreciated. John didn’t have the same problem, as you can tell from his expression! Well the afternoon passed in a mixture of fine weather, thunderstorms, hail and a return to sunshine! Succumbing to sleep (exhaustion more like!) I was awakened at 5.15 to be informed that ‘enough was enough ‘ and the Zip curse was formally acknowledged to have returned. Wishing me well on the US adventure, I parted company from these great guys after Alan, as usual, helped me pack away. Driving home (carefully) I reflected that Rudyard, where I had caught my 1st and most recent Pike was sure to see me again, God willing! Cheers Trev PS Newt, Thanks for the Records! Yeah, I am keen on getting a set of decent scales, so we can hopefully test them! Don't work too hard in the location, I can share that with you whilre I'm over! See you soon (sooner by the day!) | peter | Hi Lads. Great reports, just catching up due to pressure of work. Malc, this foulhooking, i reckon its your well hard gobio's shoving the hook into the carp to get them out of the way so they can get at the bait. Make Friends,Go Maggotdrowning. |
| Newt | Peter - I do plan to make ole Trev use his wits and extensive knowledge of UK tactics for taking fish from interesting venues though. This one, for instance, which is on Tuckertown where we will be doing most of our fishing. The rock face continues pretty much directly down to about 20 feet. I'd love to set up on shore and give it a go but not sure how. Hopefully Trev can suggest. [:D] Newt Vail |
| esox.20 | Newt, the logical way to fish this area is by boat. roflshmbh. Seriously the only way that fish could be landed safely is by the use of a drop net. This type usually round in shape supported by 3/4 lengths of cord tied to the rim, into one length to haul it up. This type of net is used by sea anglers for use from high piers jetties etc. John chill out go fishing |
| Adam S | Hello all, what a great site this is to read reports and threads on , it really has that something special that other sites lack. anyway report : fri 3th may 2002,6pm to 9pm. venue:clonee pond. methods:my dad, waggler, lobworm over groundbait (choppie mix),feeding chopped worm and spraying maggotts. me,spinner, size one mepps aglia long. We decided to fish a short eveing session (the first time this year) on this one of my favoutite venues, its a lovely pond about 45mins drive from my home, its shallow and holds perch, eels and big shoals of lovely golden rudd (well not the ornamental golden rudd, just normal ones who are very gold),and 2 carp (but ill get to them later).it has some big fish of all species but we werent bothered with that today, we were just after a nice enjoyable evening ,with a few stripeys to liven things up. my dad set up in a deep (well 3.5 feet but deep for this pond) hole in the lillies and fished two wagglers with lobworms on over choppie worm grounbait and was spraying mags to get the rudd and perch going. i waded out in my chest waders into the pond and walked all around it spinning a small mepps.the water is gin clear and you can see the little perch attack the spinner, sometimes right up to your feet, they are aggressive little guys and often hit the spinner a number of times before finaly getting hooked,i also saw some huge shoals of rudd.i spun my way all around the lake and ended up with about 20 perch from 4 to 12 ozs , and one bigger one of about a pound and a quarter.it was really enjoyable, great fun. what was even better was that i saw no sign of the carp that were present last year, some idiot stocked in three big commons about 7lbs two summers ago,i say idiot because this is a relly lovely fishery with some great rudd fishing , and i would hate to see carp take over. luckily it looks as though the carp have gone, either removed by a like minded rudd angler, or dead. hopefully they are alive in the canal or a bigger lake somewhere where they can live out their days and pack on some weight, clonee pond is just too small to support any number of big carp. my dad sat it out in the deep spot for about 10 perch and 3 rudd on worm , some of the perch must have weighed about the same as the lobworm they were taken on,i love these little stripeys, they are just so aggressive for their size.he also got a lovely rudd just a shade under 2lbs on his last cast, a lovely buttery gold coloured fish, deep and wide.ill put up some pics in a while when i get my film developed, must get me a digicam. all this and some very tame mallards made for a very enjoyable evening and when the sun faded and some flys hatched the rudd rippled the surface with their splashy rises. Today, sat 4th may i took a walk up my local stretch of canal , right across from my house, its looking good. the place has a totally different personality from what it did a couple of weeks ago, when it was clear and dull looking then. now it has a nice colour, lillies are begining to come to the surface and lots more fish are showing themselves. its an exciting time as my tench plan goes into action, step one being to go back tomorrow to pick out a swim and rake and prebait. i spotted some nice shoals of roach under a bridge ,where some local kids tryed to catch them on a sea boat rod,15lbs line and a size 6 hook. so i brought them over some line, size 16`s,mags and groundbait and they managed to get a couple.i also saw a nice pike rush a shoal of fry and send them scattering. i have to go now to boil up some hemp, bring on the summer good luck ADAM http://communities.msn.com/ADAMSALBUM79 |

| Dai Fish | Hi all some very good reports again keep them comeing. 4/5/02 Seven Oaks fishery Pontyclun. A last min decision to go fishing when I saw the blue sky, so a flask and sarnies were hastely packed (why I bother with sarnies I dont know I never eat them when fishing) arrived at Seven Oaks at about 10am in fantastic sunshine and was amazed to see that there were only two other people on the lake, luckely my favorite swim was vacant so I setled down and set up a groundbait feeder rod with 6lb mainline and a 4lb hook legnth with a size 14 barbless animal hook the groundbait was 50/50 brown crumb and what was left of my sillybait black with carp pellets, corn and castors mixed in, I also set up a waggler rod set with a 2AA crystal waggler on to a 5lb mainline and a 3lb hook length with a size 16 barbless hook, I started on the waggler fished in the margines where I could see fish activity I was useing double castor on the hook and after about ten mins I caught what must have been my smallest carp to date it could not have been more than an inch and a half long soon to be followed by its twin then nothing for the next half hour so I switched to the feeder fished about twenty yards out a couple of quick casts to get some bait down then cast out with corn on the hook and soon had a common carp of around two pounds in the landing net unfortunatly there was a lot of damage to its mouth from a previous capture but it was obviously still feeding so it was returned, the chap two pegs from me was fishing the pole at around 11 meters and was steadily catching carp of between two and three pounds, it then went very quite for a couple of hours with not many fish being caught in this time I only managed one fish a Bream of 3.7lb then nothing until fairly late in the afternoon the fish decided to come back on the feed and I took a succsesseion of carp of between 1.5lb and 6.2lb and a few rudd from 4oz to 14oz and fish were being caught all over the lake exept on the left side bank (nearest the trout lake) where the chap fishing there did not get his first fish until after six pm, I finished fishing at around six thirty with a final weight of a little over 38lb unfortunatly a number of the fish I caught today had mouth injuries a point I discused with the owner before I left the only other down side of my day was that there were a number of children fishing with I assume their fathers these children were casting out then running off to play or to watch the people on the novice trout pond and only returning to the rods to just catch them before thay disapered in to the depths when a fish had hooked itself on their line the adults with them did nothing to incorage them to stay with the rods or to try and intervene when a fish took the bait, as hapend a couple of times, ok moan over I have had yet another fab day at this fishery which is getting better and better Dai Fish |
| beatty | just thought i'd say hello and introduce myself to what seems to be the best fishing site around. i fish with adam quite a bit, and i hope to follow his lead and post some good reports about the fishing on this side of the sea beatty |

| Geoff P | Another quick sojourn to the Neath Canal this morning. Fished from 6-15 until 10-30. Bait was the same as usual, maggot worm and caster. Red maggot brought a couple of small rudd and perch so I changed to caster and worm. This change brought a lot of perch to 1 lb. Changed bait again, this time to double caster and landed two tench, the largest weighing 4 pound,(by the cheap scales my daughter got me for my birthday)and more decent stamp perch. Unfortunately had to finish as I promised her indoors I would cook dinner today, her last treat beore the holiday next week. RSSG member - are you? |
| Ziptrev | Glad this damn computer came back, Great reports again, thanks lads, Toma, you mention USA, Ireland and England, bt Dai is also doing a fantastic job in Wales! (But Dai, Like Newt told me, please put a few spaces in, my old eyes are getting real bad! The writing is Brill and you are on a roll (38lb again!), but it would help an old Man lol, Adam's was great again, I love this variety of method's, and the spinning!!!! 20 Perch!!! thought I'd done well hooking 5 Pike! Beatty, welcome mate, go to Club House and you will see a welcome Beatty topic! Geoff, brief and sickening! I can't find a Tench this year yet! Well done. (Please explain how you can desert 4lb Tench fishing at 10.15 to cook a dinner?) What crime did you commit for God's sake? I'd sooner starve lol.(Sorry Mags) Ray, You must be spending too much time on and getting tired! Beatty said he's from the other side of the Irish Sea, not that he's a sea Angler lol Newt! English expertise! extensive? You got the wrong bloke ! However, I cant agree with John! It looks like an Eskimo Harpoon Jobbie lol Shades of Captain Ahab and Moby Dick. PS Adam,Beatty, that was filmed in Youghal Co.Cork, Gregory Peck and all! Anyway all, many thanks and please keep producing this quality stuff. much appreciated and if I cant go fishing (Yes even I have had to agree to visit Father-in-laws!) I can at least be on your banks with you! Trev Ziptrev Shouldn't happen to a DOG! |
| MALC | Date: 5/05/02 Venue: Packington Somers (Anniversary Lake) Time: 10am till 2pm (eventualy) Well as Steve W and myself had no match today we thought a day of practise at Packington Somers for a future match was in order. Our match is on Little Gearys Pool but after a phone call to the on site lodge yesterday we found out there was a match on that pool today so it was decieded that we would fish on the Anniversary Lake, so we sorted out that i would pick Steve up at 7am this morning. I also got directions from the guy on the phone as neither of us had fished there before. So i was up at 5.30 this mornning and eager to go fishing as normal and after loading the car i left the house at 6.45 and for once arrived at Steve's early at 6.50. So we left Steve's at 7am and as it is only a 20 min drive to Packington we thought we'd be there by 7.30 and have a bite to eat in their cafe. Normaly my sense of direction is spot on and i'll find anywhere without any problem's, NOTE I SAID NORMALY. Today was totaly different i turned right off the A45 when i should have turned left. I was told to look for the Golf course, and we found a golf course infact we found four of them. At 1 of the course's we even found Packington Fishery, the only trouble was it was the TROUT FISHERY (it did look nice though) and a nice man told us where to go (about 4 miles back the way we came). We eventually found the right Packington at 9am (yes 2 hours to do a 20 min journey). So we just settled for a bacon sarnie each as we were late and they were C**P as there was no butter and at £4 for 2 sarnies and 2 coffee's they wer'nt cheep either. After the coffee we went for a wander to find the pool (turned out to be a long walk) but at least it looked pleasant unlike most on the site which were just barren hole's with grass around them. So onto the fishing. We sat with a reed fringed island at 11mtrs which looked realy inviting. On plumbing up found about 2½ ft of water against the reeds so picked 2 line to fish, 1 straight infront and the 2nd at 2 o'clock. Line 1 was fed with riddled meat and pellets whilst line 2 got just pellets. Only set up 1 rig which was a 4x12 Drennan Carp float on .10 line direct to a 16 animal hook with a soft 14 lacy (both swims were the same depth). Second put in with a piece of meat resulted in a small carp about 10oz so i thought maybe the day would turn out fine in the end. But after 2 hours and no more fish to me ( Steve had 2 tench by this time best about 1½lb )i started to think maybe today should stop. So a break was called for and i went for a walk to see the pool we got our match on. On returning gave Steve the low down on the other pool (they were catching) regards depths and such then tried to bring some life into my swim with a bit more aggressive feeding. This worked (a bit) as i ended up with 6 small carp between about 6oz and 1lb. Can't say to much about how Steve fished as he wont play ball. But he ended up with the 2 tench plus a Goldfish of about ½lb all caught on maggot. At 2 o'clock i said thats it lets go so home we went and it only took 20 mins to get back. So even if the fishing was not very good we had a good laugh on the way driving past all the golf courses ( and i'll get stick for that for ages ) and the normal banter whilst fishing. Plus we got a few idea's for our match. And there's always next time. Malc Fish with Friends @ MaggotDrowning.com |
| toma | Malc the fishing was not good you say!!! at least you were FISHING, i went shopping with my mrs, give me a bad days fishing anytime rather than shopping. | martin. | hi new lake tydd st giles golf course 5-5-2002 Me & phil arrived at 5-45 it was cold overcast & very windy just got whips, maggots & keepnet out of motor as it was our intention to have 2 or 3 hours on a small pond between 1st T & 18th hole just to get some roach to transfer into big lake well we forgot to tell the roach our plan & they decided to be elusive in 2hrs we only managed 86 roach to 4ozs, So after we released these we set about finding which pegs to fish phil decided on 26 where there was fallen tree in the edge of the water where we knew the small fish had made there home. As the wind was coming straight diagnally across the lake into the corner next to peg 30 where the lillies are just coming up i decided to set up here . i was not to botherd about the small stuff so i set up a no 12lacky with 0.15 straight through to 12 mustad carp b/less baited with 4 white maggots there was 2ft 6" of water next to lillies so i started loosefeediding 6 maggots every few minutes after 30 mins i hit a carp about 8oz+ which was followed at regular intervals by more caarp of different strains & goldfish then about 1-20 float just sails away i hit it & about 4m of lacy starts going across lake 15min later a nice ghostie came to the net i reconised it as the largest 1 that had ever been stocked & i had put it in last sept when my daughter caught it in the pond when it was released it was just under 12lb it came out today at 13-05 ( will post photo after w/e) it went on to get a few more between 8ozs & 4lb ended day with about 35lb+phil had been catching all day but his was mostly stuff up to 4ozs still one thing about a lake on a golf course theres allways the 19 hole to visit afterwards with some good blackstuff tight lines. martin. forgot to say this was first time out with my new Diawa 221 & it was well worth it Edited by - martin. on 05 May 2002 10:28:21 PM |

| Ziptrev | 6/05/02 Bank Holiday Monday Typically for a Bank Holiday in Britain, the day was overcast, with sullen, leaden clouds filling the sky as dawn approached. I have long since practised ignoring Bank Holidays for the Special Events that fill these days. Rarely does the weather support the Fete’s, Gala’s, in Chesterfields case in May, the annual Fun Fair arrival! or other ‘Happenings’ Even when it does, the extra traffic inconvenience, crowd jostling and rip-off prices have tended to see me staying at home, or doing my own thing! Therefore I was pleased to discover that the National Health Service had decided that it could not do without my wife today and thus I was free to fish! I had arranged to meet Red Leader in the afternoon on his return from the Orchid Lakes complex, so I decided to solve a minor mystery on my new club card. The new waters I can now fish under the Derby Railway card are detailed in their extent, the coarse and trout where applicable seasons are all highlighted; the methods and seasons of fly only are delineated; and maps are provided. Except in 2 cases!!! Why, I had wondered was the 200-yard stretch at Matlock Bath Station not mapped? Also a 200-yard stretch in Derby City? Clearly defined in text as ‘200 yds of the upstream bank from Matlock Bath Station’ But why no map, as all the other 20 or so stretches were meticulously detailed. Well, it was only 200yds and my poor wife’s shift had given me the opportunity to find out! Thus at 5.00 am, I cruised through a deserted town, quieter than even a normal working Monday, because even the Postmen, Milkmen and others were absent! Later on the traffic would be horrendous as harassed parents queued on the main roads to try and reach the ‘Young Farmers’, Car Boot specials and Fund Raising School Fetes! Each year it gets’s crazier, and I live in anticipation of some nutter advertising a ‘Sponsored Suicide’ in the near future! Pulling on to the Matlock Bath Stations Car Park, I donned full winter gear, fleece, Bib and Brace and Waterproof Jacket, as it was cold, drizzling and generally a fine English Spring Day! I gleefully thought of Newt’s report of a surface water temperature of 70 degs and hope that in 4 days time I will experience a break from these climes! However, I was not depressed, as I was going to fish this mysterious stretch! Ten minutes later, I was depressed! Walking from the Car Park, I discovered why no one had bothered to highlight this section of the River. The Right hand bank descends at least 40 feet, almost vertically and is packed with densely foliaged trees! The water level was extremely low, and some flat bank areas could just be made out, but under normal conditions it would be totally impossible! I walked the stretch twice and then (being pig-headed as well as an idiot, laboriously made my way down the extremely angled bank (far greater angle than Parsons Drove Martin!) to the 1 tiny gap that I could see between 2 trees! Pulling out my made up quiver rod and assembling it with great difficulty, I decided not to even try to put up a rod rest in the jumble of rocks at my feet! I had to try, there could be a record Perch here, no one else would have offered him bait! No one else would be stupid enough to try! I flicked out the bomb, which landed about a 3rd of the way across the river, approximately 20 yards from where I meant it to land and it only travelled 10! The current immediately pulled it downstream, out of sight behind the left tree! The tip steadied, too steady! I was snagged somewhere! I reeled in and yes, the tip went solid. Tug once, tug twice! The bomb exploded from the water, the hook caught in the shoots that arose from the base of the tree and I had a 5-minute job, precariously leaning out and breaking off wire tough tendrils to rescue it. I sat in a small clump of nettles and ivy and carefully went over the rig, rebaiting with another worm. Try again! This time better, a sideways cast due to space, saw the bomb hit the water just over halfway and flick satisfyingly as it bumped over the gravel bottom. Just right for searching the swim! BUT, only briefly! A sudden cessation told me that I had snagged again. This time solid! After a few tentative pulls, no way to gain a new angle, a harder pull and a ‘Twang’ as the line parted and all the end tackle remained. OK record Perch! Stay there, enough was enough! Laboriously I repacked my gear, leaving re-rigging to a better area, pulled my way up the mountainous bank, getting stung and turning my ankle twice as stones moved and grass tufts gave way, to arrive finally at the top, exhausted after less than an hour from leaving home with such anticipation! After a breather, I made it back to the car and decided to revisit the successful swim I had found that produced 5 good Brown Trout and thus rescue my day! Crossing the Railway Bridge, I stopped to take this photograph to give you a better idea of the Terrain! I think it was added to the Railway book as an afterthought, as they couldn’t find anyone who wanted it! In the top left background, you can see the Cable Car that takes Trippers from Matlock to ‘The Heights of Abraham’, a Tourist attraction in this area. Is there any Canadian Lumberjack on this forum who can advise me as to how to fish from this Right hand bank? Just over a mile Drive and I was back through the Stone Gateway and happily on my way to the main section of the Darley Dale Derwent I have described before. Settling in to the comfortable swim, I quickly reset my rod, added my worm and cast! Immediately the Quiver jerked and I was into a defiant fish! I knew this wasn’t a Trout from the Jag, Jag, Jag fight and at first thought it a Perch, but the first time the Dorsal fin broke the water, it was unmistakeable Yes, Another Fine Grayling The time, just 6.40 and I safely had until 1.00, so I could be forgiven for expecting a very nice days fishing. I should have known better! The drizzly rain returned, I discovered the water temperature was just 51.4 degs, the coldest for over a fortnight and that the Grayling was a loner! I set up a small Mepps spinner and thrashed the water with it for 30 minutes! The fish were indifferent to it. I moved further downstream and tried the bomb again, no more bites. You may recall that at the time I split my Daiwa tip, I then lost the retaining screw for my reel! At about 10.00, I had the line wrap round the quiver tip and after turning the rod to straighten it; I noticed the handle had dropped out of the Reel! Over a dense bed of nettles. I looked at them and reasoned that if I tried to search through them, I would inevitably get stung, possibly find brambles in there and get scratched, and probably not find it anyway! So! I tried to search through them, got stung, found some brambles that scratched me and didn’t find it anyway! Luckily, the Spinning reel handle spindle fitted, so I retrieved my line, packed all my gear away and went home to enjoy a nice long bath! This was not one of Zippy’s better days! But Guess what! I’m fishing tomorrow! Good Luck All Trev Ziptrev Shouldn't happen to a DOG! Edited by - Ziptrev on 06 May 2002 6:26:32 PM |
| toma | 06/05/02 Brancepeth Pond, Durham. Early rise again 4.45am, flask of soup made, hot water in flask for tea, and sarnies made. Picked up at 5.30 and away we go. Arrived at the pond at about 6.20,having stopped at the farmhouse to pay the day ticket{in an envelope put in a box} Robbie said look at that, when i turned around what did i see?????? a peacock, out came my camera got 2 foto's then put it away, walking back from the car to have another look what did it do? full plummage up in display for his mate, blast i put my camera away, what a georgous site to see. Down to the pond, a good walk, phew exhausted. Picked peg 6 again, Richie peg 5 gary on peg 7, Gary comes from Watford BTW but abodes up here, Gary's uncle and two cousins were fishing with us, came up for a few days. Robbie and Peter went to the other side of the pond and Gary's family went to the bottom of the pond, 8 fishing in all, the farmer had let us have it to fish by ourselves. Tactics, pole to 11mtrs 0.75GR Drennen float, 3lb M/L 2 LB H/L size 18 B611 hook Bait red maggot, caster and red worm's over 2 balls of groundbait. First put in RUDD of about 2oz that was at about 7.15am After that ????? NOTHING, the wind was blowing like mad, not a chance of controling the pole, no way Hosay, After about 2-3 hours of fighting with the pole, up went my brolly on the bankside for a respite from the wind, a cup of tea later, i was as snug as a bug in a rug,yep i FELL ASLEEP. When i woke up the usual banter was exchanged, Part time angler, among other saying, too rude to mention, the catch rate with the others NOTHING, not a thing. Garys family were fishing for the carp, waggler and method feeder, they had some bites but no fish. All in all i still enjoyed the day, and enjoyed meeting some anglers from down south, told them about the 20th at Drayton hoping for some tips only to be told sorry never fished it, but never mind we can rely on Malc. Home at 4.45pm gear sorted out and put away then my mrs came in, wishing Kath a happy birthday i asked what would you like for tea, anything she said, a fone call later, 25mins the door bell rang, THE INDIAN MEAL had arrived, very nice it was guys i can tell you. No fishing for me until the 20th got to do some work in the house. Not a productive day but an enjoyable day with some good company See everybody on the 20th Andy i'm going fishing |
| peter | LOL..........Trev, Life is never simple with you around,The sort of day that most people would be happy NOT to report. But as Keith Arthur says of fishing "It's the finest excuse known to man for loafing in the country!" And that Grayling i'm sure made it all worth while. Peter. Make Friends,Go Maggotdrowning. |

See you Trev Andy i'm going fishing |
| Dai Fish | Hi all I had an unexpected day at Seven Oaks today, Mon 6/5/02, I will explain why it was unexpected, bank holidays are usualy a family day out and so it was to be today until my wife and children decided to go somewhere that is not very wheelchair friendly, so my wife sugested I go fishing for the day instead, now I I obviously put up a strong argument against this idea but as is usual in this house I lost, and grudgingly had to accept that I had to go fishing (god I love my wife sometimes). Fishing from 10am to 7.30pm, the weather to start was very cloudy with a cold wind, I fished a waggler set at 18 inches for fishing in the margins and a groundbait feeder for fishing out in to the lake, I started on the feeder whilst feeding the margin line, I did not have to wait long before the tip shot round and a lovely common carp weighing 2.8lb graced my net at this time no other fish had been caught on the lake and this was to continue for some time. I then switched to the waggler around lunch time and had quite a quick response and at 1.15pm mt float sailed gently away and it was a full 30mins before I saw it again and I sliped the net under a PB mirror carp weighing 13.4lb which was one hell of a fight on my light float rod with a 5lb mainline and a 3lb hooklink for the first twenty five mins I had no control whatsoever, it just took me all over the lake as if on a site seeing tour and by the time I netted the fish quite a crowd had gathered (as if I did not have enough pressure) and I did not want to look like a bigger wally than normal. I then went back on to the feeder and straight away the tip went round and I netted a common of 6.2lb. The weather improved in the afternoon the wind droped and the sun made an apearence, I then took carp at a steady rate until I almost lost my float rod when a fish took it straight off the rest, sadly I lost that fish when it smashed me when I could not give it line fast enough, but that aside I had a fantastic day catching 12 carp for a total weight of a shade under 73lb, which is another PB as I have never caught enywhere near that amount before. This and other reports that I have writen on this water may make it look like its an easy water to fish, this is not so, a lot of people were strugaling for bites today and although I think everybody caught fish there were not that many comeing out, the water is well stocked but the fish still have to be caught, but when you do catch them thay are normaly of a good size. | Ziptrev | Dai, Congratulations, Great result, great post and 2 new PB's, a hell of different day from mine LOL Even got the spaces, thanks mate, looking forward to seeing you again at Drayton, (Unless you join the match circuit with these results and ignore us!) | Dave | Stu, Danny and I went to Orchid Lakes for the Bank Holiday week-end, leaving Leeds on Saturday morning and returning on Monday at 5.00pm. We also met up with Little Willie on the way down The venue showed lots of promise having three lakes - one match lake, one (Orchid Lake) dedicated Carp Lake and the third being Dorchester Lagoon which holds a good head of Bream, Tench, Carp and Silver fish plus a few Pike. We had previously decided to fish the Dorchester and have a go for the Tench, Bream and hopefully land a Carp or two. The week previous a 36lb'er had come out! Unfortunately a cold snap had moved in with the NE wind and the fishing in general wasn't too good. We all started fishing at 12.00 mid-day on the Saturday and fished into the night. Stu, Danny and LWillie hit the sacks about 1.00pm (and yes we used the bivvies [:P]) whilst I stayed and fished on...and on.. and on.. but to no avail, not even a touch. Here's some pics to proove it :) The temperature that night was in the region of 2oc and was reduced at times further by the wind. Sunday morning came along with fresh hopes but nope still nothing despite changing methods, baits, tactics and spodding the area trying to and locating the gravel bars. A few times our hopes were raised as we had the odd tremble on our alarms but they must have just been small 'bits' just trying the baits or bumping into the line. Anyway, a change was in order and we decided to move further down to fresh pegs. Guess what? It happened. Whilst moving my gear I got the only bite of the day and wasn't near enough to strike in time [V] The new swims were a lot snaggier with plenty of features and it wasn't long again before we manged to locate possible feeding grounds and places where the fish looked like they might well pass by or hole up. That afternoon Stu shouted, he was into a fish, wahey all was not lost - imagine the scene, artificial boilie popped up on a hair rig fished over a clearing in a patch of weed. The buzzer tweeked once and once again, the line moved followed by another tweek, Stu struck, he's in, it comes reluctantly to the awaiting net AND...... it was a PIKE - a pike on a boilie, an artificial one at that! Ay least he hadn't blanked. The evening drew in, I had managed to get an hour's sleep and the stall was set out for the night ahead aided by a belly full from the local Chinese Takeaway. We watched, we waited, we re-cast, we re-baited but try as we may there was no sign of activity, no movements of fish nor even a sniff at the baits. Everyone again hit the sack bar from yours truly who by then was getting desperate [:)] I had to get a fish, any fish would do never mind a carp, tench or bream - anything, lol. Nothing would have been a nuisance [:P] The night wore on and it happened - just as things couldn't get worse, the heavens opened and it rained... and rained.. and rained. We were only saying earlier that at least when we decide to go home on the Monday our tackle and bivvies would be dry, spoke too soon. Well it got to 4am and still nothing bar from a few trees when casting in the dark and by this time my eyes were in self closing mode, I had to sleep. I awoke two hours later to the sound of the local geese carrying on infront of the swims. Tackled back up out it went and this time a whole new tactic was in order. A feeder full of chopped worm and a couple on the hook. The second rod was armed with luncheon meat and several pieces offered loosely courtesy of a stringer. I proceeded to perform a methodical sweep of the area with the hope of enticing something, anything to bite. Alas still nothing, it was almost as though the fish had left the lake. In reality I think they had headed off to the deeper waters out of reach of most anglers but warmer for them. We could have done with Trev and his thermometer, lol [:)] Over the weekend a few tench and carp were caught around the lake but the stories were all too similar. Orchid Lake itself produced a few double figure carp including one in the 20's but again it was slow compared to previous weeks. Going to give it another go sometime as the venue holds plenty of promise and the catches are generally good with some cracking fish. Take a look at their site: www.orchidlakes.co.uk How much gear can you get into a Volvo? ~>lol Dave |
| Ray Owen | Gents, Once again some excellent reports. Dai Fish what can u say? A excellent fish and a great bag well done mate ( need some work on the smile mate lolo ) tight lines Ray Edited by - Ray Owen on 08 May 2002 8:49:24 PM |
| toma | Dave i bet you enjoyed the weekend tho, a pike on a boilie???????. how many anglers can say they had a pike on a boilie????? Know how you feel Dave i had a day like your WEEKEND, on Monday, Good report Dave Andy i'm going fishing |
| MALC | Dai, Great fish nice piccy, well done mate. Dave, Unlucky on the Lagoon it was the same 20+ years ago when i used to fish it, but when it fished you could do no wrong and the road bank into the trees was always a good Tench area at first light. I used to cycle it from Reading (24 miles away). Now My Report Date : 7/5/02 Venue: Misterton Hall Time : 9am till 2pm This report and the next are a bit late but to much fishing and work to do them earlier. Tuesday saw me guesting (cheers Dirk |
| MALC | Date : 8/5/02 Venue : Borough Hill Bottom Pool Time : 6pm till 8.45pm This was to be an open i'd arranged and with 11 names down i was a bit miffed when only 3 others turned up so as there were only 4 of us (same people as last week) we said we'd just have a £2 knockupon the bottom pool. Now those that have read the reports on the Match Results section laterly will know that this place has some VERY HARD GUDGEON that bully out the carp, and so i've been trying to sort out how to stop the Gudgeon from doing this with different feeding pattern with Meat n Pellet as feed and Meat as hook bait. Well tonight i think i sorted it as i never had a single Gudgeon and they only stuck the hook in the tail of 2 carp today . Fished 2 lines 1 at 5mtrs in front and the other 3mtrs to the left both swims were about 4ft deep and i used the same rig for both which was a 4x14 Drennen carp float with 3no8 and 2no10 shot as a bulk 8" from the hook and 1no10 4" from the hook. This was fished on .10 direct to a size 16 animal hook with a pellet of meat as hook bait. Both were fished just touching bottom Line 1 was fed with half a small pot of riddled meat and line 2 got the same qty of 5mm trout pellet. Both swims were only fed twice more with the same amounts and qty of baits. Ended with 15 carp and only lost 4 of which 2 were foul hooked for a total weight of 32lb 9oz. The 4 weights were as follows: Malc 32lb 9oz Lee 25lb 4oz Jay 13lb 14oz Geoff 1lb 8oz Not bad for 2¾ hours fishing. Malc Fish with Friends @ MaggotDrowning.com |
| Ziptrev | Glad I just caught these, Nice fishing MALC, I'll catch up with Dirk's report from Newt's! Looks as though the weather is warming for my return! S wind on the 17th, CYA Trev (I'll leave my query over riddled meat forming a ball 'til then LOL) bye Trev Ziptrev Shouldn't happen to a DOG! |
| MALC | Date : 9/5/02 Venue : Holly Farm (Gils Lake) Time : 10am till 3pm Today i guested again with The Rugby Disabled Club and todays match was on the small fish lake at Holly Farm which for those that are dont know the venue is a 40+ peg continous snake type pool with the far bank averaging 13mtr away. It's stuffed full of almost every type of fish from fry to about 1lb but most average nearer 6oz. As is normal with these matches no money is at stake (except £1 side bet with Dirk), the members fish for trophies which seams to make the atmosphere a lot better during their matches rather than the win at all cost approach you get when money is involved. On to the fishing Gils lake is 1 of my favourite venue's as the riddled meat (surprise) works realy well there and yes it was my main approach today along with big maggot. I drew peg 39 (thats the peg Gemma fished Scott when you fished it with us last year) which is along the back of the pool on a 4 peg straight. Although i had reeds on the far bank i never fish further than 5 mtrs here aand normaly only about 2mtrs and today was no different. I set up 3 rigs as follows: Rig 1 for fishing at 5 mtr into 5ft of water was a Drennan Roach float taking .40gr which was a bulk of no8 shot 18" from the hook and 2 no11 droppers tied to .10 line direct to a size 16 animal hook to 6 lacy for the meat. Rig 2 for fishing 2mtrs to the right against my keepnet into 2ft of water was a 4x10 Drennan Roach float shotted with spread out no11 shot on the same line and hook as rig 1 but to a 5 lacy also for the meat. Rig 3 was a 2x10 unknown canal float fished 2mtr to my left on the same line but to a B510 hook and no 4 lacy for the maggot into 10" of water. At the start of the match ½ small pot of meat went into the 2 meat swims and 4 or 5 maggots were flicked to the left swim. It took 20 mins to get the first fish which was from the furthest swim and that was a Cruican about 4oz. That was followed by a couple more then i started rotating between the 3 swims taking a couple of fish from each then going on to the next one. Could not keep them coming all day and kept getting blank spells which is when i refed each swim with about 10 pieces of meat or maggots depending on the swim. Ended the day with 62 fish which included 4 types of Carp, Roach, Rudd and Tench, for a weight of 15lb 8oz. The final result was as follows: 1st Malc 15lb 8oz 2nd Dirk 10lb 2oz 3rd Rob 8lb 9oz 4th Fred 7lb 2oz 5th Mick 6lb 3oz As a foot note i would just like to say REVENGE IS SWEET |
| Adam S | Hello everyone brilliant reports everybody well its been fine weather here for the past week, warm, still and little rain. i havent had a chance to fish any myself as i have been too busy bringing groups of kids fishing with the dublin angling initiative, but i have been prebaiting a spot on my home stretch of canal for three days and i got my chance to fish it today (well yesterday now, thursday). report:9th may 2002 4.30pm-9.30pm venue:royal canal, kildare, ireland weather:sunny and warm, not a cloud in the sky method:waggler and whip baits:maggott over hemp and groundbait i balled in six balls at the start on a swim at 5mtrs and 7 on another at about 11mtrs ,at the bottom of the near and far shelf. i fished twin wagglers ,one nearside and one far, both 3bb crystals,3lbs hook (pro micron) and size 18 hook. eoin fished 4mtr whip on the nearside beside a patch of lillies, near my close in waggler swim.the farside swim was also near lillies. the start was slow with only one hybrid and three small perch on the waggler , but at about 6pm eoin began to catch well on the whip , mostly hybrids up to about 1lbs, i have the whip set up with a tight number 12 elastic to aid fighting big fish so the small hybrids were not really a problem to land. i kept topping up with the odd ball of groundbait and feeding maggotts over the top and eventually the bigger fish came on with some hybrids and bream to 3lbs coming on the waggler, eoin was begining to have trouble with bigger fish on the whip so he put it down and took one of the wagglers, this is when things got good. the bream were a strange sight as we rarely catch any on this stretch, a lot of them were in poor condition with sores and ragged fins, which would suggest they have only recently been stocked as this stretch is rarely fished.we also caught a tagged hybrid, cfb specimen 10867 in fact, so i will find out for sure when they were stocked. the fishing went from strenght to strenght and both eoin and i were thrilled to catch our first tench from our home stretch at exactly the same time,it was an interesting fight as we were sharing a landing net,but we got them both in ok. we werent hassled by the ducks this week , although there were a few around they kept their distance . we also saw an albino mallard duckling.ill put some pics of him and the fish on on monday when my pics are developed. we packed up at 9.30pm ,and were both very happy. final weight was about 50lbs(combined) , 7 tench to 3.5lbs and 12 or so big hybrids and bream to 3lbs 3oz plus smaller perch, hybrids and roach. at last the tench are here, and so is the summer. good luck all ADAM http://communities.msn.com/ADAMSALBUM79 |
| Ziptrev | Hey this is magic! Sitting here on Jans computer, 6-8000 miles away, WARM and reading cracking reports from back home! This puter is one hell of a lot quicker than mine too! lol Great stuff MALC, lol (no post from Dirk then!) Nice 1 Adam, look forward to "Once upon a time there was a Little white duck!" Cheers Trev Ziptrev Shouldn't happen to a DOG! |
| beatty | good account of the day adam, i would totally concure. and what a day it was! ah, how great it was to see that red eye looking back at me as i slipped the net under a 3.5lb male tinca. luckily at that stage in the day i had reverted to a waggler rod rather than the whip or i would have been rightly screwed. trying to turn a hard fighting male around would have been interesting though! i had a lot of fun earlier in the evening trying to land hybrids up to about 2lbs on the whip. i had to leave my chair and follow them along the bank on two occasions, struggling to grab the landing net as i leapt from my comfortable position! but it was worth it just for the photos that we got! anyway, back to the tench! a lovely male with some serious muscle around his anal fins, obviously a healthy fish. no scars or anything like that, although nearly all the tench had a few leaches left on their tales and fins, showing that they really had come on to the feed just recently, maybe that was why they fought so hard! anyway, i'll leave it there, cause i want to go to bed, look forward to reading more posts lads, they're always interesting! |
| peter | Sunday 12/5/02. Off to Gold Valley to fish Syndicate Lake. The complex consists of 6 lakes (old gravel workings)3 of which are used for matches on a regular basis. In summer weights of over 100lbs are a common occurance, but this early in the year are something of a rarity. Arriving early breakfast in the clubhouse (£4,full english) was the order of the day, before dipping into the drawbag to find Peg 109 sticking to my hand. Syndicate Lake. Now syndicate holds a good head of Tench,Bream,Crucians,Perch & Roach, but it is the carp that are the main target once the weather starts to warm up.The carp in here can be real creatures so 8lb reel lines and 6lb hook lengths are called for on the advise of Will Raison (The Co-Owner & England International). Two rods were set up,1 groundbait feeder and 1 waggler. The groundbait was 2 bags of Sensas Gold and 1 of crushed hemp mixed on the dry side so as to explode out of the mesh feeder that was finished off with a Drennan Carbon Carp hook in a size 14 fished with 3/4 red maggots. The waggler was a 3aaa crystal fished about 3inches over depth in about 5 feet of water at 2 rodlengths. In this swim i laid down a large bed of hemp (about 3 pints) to try and stop anything in it's tracks that happened upon it. Starting on the feeder,it was quite slow with only a skimmer of 1½lbs to show for the first hour, but a number of liners encouraged me to stay with it.The next proper bite nearly ripped the rod from my hand, and after 10 mins a lovely Common, well into double figures was heading for the net,BUT a last minute dive saw it dive towards my keepnet and neatly transfer the hook to said net Back out with the feeder and soon 3 of its smaller brothers were safely IN the net.No more bites followed so with a couple of hours to go it was waggler time. First cast and after 10secs the float buried and the culprit a 5lb mirror was joining it's pals in the net.In the next two hours i added another 7 to the total before the whistle went. At the scales i weighed in 11 carp and i skimmer for a total weight of 53lbs 4ozs,good enough for third on the day,and 8 more points toward the club championship and i also qualified for the next round of the club Knockout trophy,so quite a satisfying day all round. The next round is at Rayne Lodge,Essex in 3 weeks time. PS, mention has to be made of the winners catch.Paul Ollerenshaw (the reigning club champion) put an amazing 152lbs 12ozs of carp on the scales to record the largest winning weight in the clubs 40 year history.Well Done Paul. | Adam S | Hello everybody Thanks everyone for all the reports they really are a great read. I have fished the same canal swim for two of the past three days since thursday, same baits, tactics etc.. the results have been a little slower but the fish have still been feeding . The two sessions i have fished (on fri and sunday have been three and a half hour ones with results being: fri:8 bream to 2.5lbs,one eel(doh),one tench 5lbs 6oz sun:6 bream to 2lbs,one hybrid, four perch, one tench 4lbs 1oz ill probably fish this swim once or twice more before moving to a new one. on sunday i also had to pull a dead pike from the canal, a local kid told me another lad caught it and didnt know how to handle it and thus it died,it probably weighed 10lbs when alive but the rats had reduced it to about 7 , and it was beginning to stink so out it came.pity.i told the kid to tell his friend to only pike fish if he has an experienced angler with him,he said he would so lets hope its a one off. The albino duckling still lives, but my pics of him didnt come out. he sticks out like a sore thumb with all his dull brown siblings, but he seems healthy. Here are a few pics from my last reports. clonee pond 3rd may 2002: Thia is one of my spinner caught perch, they all had really bright markings: Canal 9th may 2002: This is eoin with one of the better tench: this is me with one of the bream and this is the bag, about 50lbs. The bream and hybrid fishing has been going well for me so far this year, but now (i hope) its tench time and then some carp after that. A cold winter of pike fishing is almost forgotten now. Good luck everyone ADAM |
| Dai Fish | Hi all, there are some more exelent reports here again well done to you all, this has got to be one of the most popular pages on any of the fishing web sites. My report is a little late sorry, I have been haveing problems trying to post on here tonight. I fished on Sunday at Seven Oaks with my 12 year old son Daniel and his mate Matthew, the fishing was not as prolific as it can be but we all managed to catch some fish, I started by catching two Bream of just about four and a quater pounds, both had some nasty cuts on both sides from spawning I presume. Then Daniel hooked in to a Carp of six pounds and eight ounces, a PB by a very long way the look of joy on his face will stay with me for a very long time, I took this pic of him (I hope it works). Matt also caught a new PB a Carp of just over two and a half pounds which he was overjoyed at he managed to catch another two carp, Daniel caught seven fish in total and I managed a few but the biggest went to Daniel a fact that I was very happy about. We had a wonderful day and I even managed to get sunburnt on my neck and arms, roll on the next trip. Dai Fish |

| Ziptrev | Today, Newt kindly arranged to take me to Pops Lake, America's answer to UK Match fishing! Arriving at 7.00 am, we had drawn and were on the peg by 7.25. Newt had arranged through another forum to meet Gary Shears, who is a dedicated Pay Lake Fisherman. The topic deserves explanation in greater detail, so I'll post fully under the American Experience soon. However, I just wanted to highlight that I was a witness to Newt catching his PB Carp at 14lb 13ozs and winning an hourly prize, plus 3rd biggest fish of the day, in this his first ever match (We joined in jointly LOL and I will expand on the rules later) Outlay $71, winnings $70, but a fitting end to our 6 days of hitting different fishing! Sadly, time has passed in moments when I was looking forward to hours! and tomorrow I start the homeward trek! Please join me in congratulating Newt and C U all soon Trev Ziptrev Shouldn't happen to a DOG! |

| beatty | congratulations on the new personal best newt! sounds like you had a great day's fishing and a lovely week with ziptrev. well done mate can i just add that i recently have been doing a bit of business with bennetts of sheffield and i have been hugely disappointed with the service. i ordered a pair of sundridge hotfoot boots, and some handwarmers and after waiting two weeks i e-mailed them. i recieved a reply three days later saying that they were awaiting a delivery of handwarmers themselves. a week later i had not recieved the order so i mailed them again to find that the order came in and that the package would be sent "a.s.a.p." can i just point out that my credit card had been charged three days after the order was placed originally, and after three weeks, i was still awaiting delivery. a month later, i had not received shipment still, but had recieved another mail from them. this was to inform me that there was to be another charge made to my credit card for addditional delivery costs. a further stg.£22! on top of what i had already paid! so, i decided to cancel the order all together this afternoon, and have also decided that i will never again deal with bennetts. the service was terrible, their manners were brutal (they never thought of mailing me to inform me of the initial delay until i made a complaint) and their costs were well above what they should have been. they must be making a big profit with the postage, and not just passing the actual charge on, because i recieved a delivery from fisherman's friend last year, which would certainly have weighed more than my latest order, yet the postage amounted to only stg.£7! phew, sorry for that rant, but i had to get it off my chest! beatty |
