A big question this. No expert, but in the old days on a river you fed hemp and fished caster or tares. As for shotting I would suggest bulks. Floats , good ole stick. Hooks, I prefered round bend to suit size of bait. lastly hemp is hooked by pushing the bend of the hook into the split in the outer shell of the seed. If prepared correctly it won't come off. A bit like a nearly closed split shot having a hook bend jammed into it.

Gallowman has the hooking of hemp technique spot on, use slightly less cooked (not fully split) for hookbait, squeeze the hemp at the ends a little, and the split will open, put the bend in and let go of the hemp. The hemp clamps the hook so to speak.

I use B520's or B511's, the latter for little fish, the B520's for more and slightly bigger fish.

Shotting wise, use whatever the fish dictate, but i like to use a bulk where poss and fish the last 18 or so inches with 2 or 3 no.10 shot spread. Fish just a smidge off bottom. Use a slim float for shallow water or fishing well off bottom. Use a rugby ball shape for bulk/deeper/slowish moving water.

If using on a waggler, fish 3 bulks of 2x no.8 shot and a 10 dropper. i find i get less tangles and positive bites. Insert Waggler unless windy. Size depends on depth and distance.

Would love to say I'm a 'top class all-rounder'......but I would not be telling the whole truth!!

Foolproof method of hooking hemp is to push the point throught the part where the seed was attached to the plant. You can pierce this first with a needle to help. Possible then to catch more than one fish on a grain. Size 16 B511 is my choice of hook.

Average club angler who seems to get the right methods sorted halfway through a match, just in time to say "if only"

Fished hemp yesterday on the Aire & Calder it has been a long time since I fished this method but hook Preston 322 16 with the hemp on the bend fishing it on the drop with a 0.8 NG Gimp with strung out Stotz even when pulling they still wanted it this way had a great day finished with about 10 lb of prime roach to 12oz

Prefer either Stotz or Styles for this as normal round shot can be mistaken for hemp if they are really having it

I wish Heisenberg would make his mind up
