July 1, Willows Lake, London Colney
Good turnout for our first match of the new season. Blowing a bit of a hoolie as the lake is rather open, but fished pretty well although a couple of very hard areas on the day
1/ Rob Blackburn 25-0, one carp , three decent bream plus skimmers, method amd pellet/maggot, peg 2 2/ Dave Dorsett 24-14, bream and skimmers, feeder and pellet, peg 26 3/ Martin Harper 20-14, one carp, two decent bream plus skimmers, feeder and boilie/ maggot, peg 3 4/ Gary Young 18-3 all roach, pole and caster, peg 30
Frustrating day for me, one more bream and a skimmer and would have won it but the fish just wouldn't settle. Thought had finally cracked it with 45 mins to go when had three in a row on red pineapple boilie but they went as quickly as they arrived. Was always playing catch up with Rob on my left who had his carp (same size as mine, 6-8) within about 20 seconds of the start. Had mine after 40 minutes by which time he had a couple of skimmers as well

July 8, Club lake, Hythe End, nr Wraysbury.
Typically frustrating day here. Pleasure catches up to 80 lb of tench and carp midweek, loads of fish moving when took a walk round yesterday, and then come match day....
1/ Don Wilkinson 21-9, two bream, best 8-12, and a carp, method and corn, peg 27 2/ John Barnes 6-5, a tench and a perch, feeder and worm, peg 39 3/ Derek Turton 4-12, one carp, method and pellet, peg 36 4/ Martin Harper 0-6, two perch, method and maggot ( ! )peg 40
Dont think have ever caught perch on the method feeder before ! Very very frustrating day for all. John on 39 had line bites all afternoon and a couple of the pegs on the deep bank (where nobody weighed in) had them non stop for the first two hours. Also on the deep bank Ross on peg 20 had loads of carp and bream on the top in front of him at times and lost two foul hookers but they just wouldn't feed. I had what looked like a proper pull round on a boilie after twenty minutes but nothing there. Should have just fished for perch..... |

July 22, Riverside, Northwood Lovely little fishery but not at its best on a bright sunny day given that its mostly less than 3 ft deep 1/ Richard Smith 20-13-0 skimmers and a couple of crucians, pole and meat 2/ Bob Hawes 12-10-0 skimmers , waggler and pellet/maggot 3/ Mark O'Leary 12-9-8 mostly a carp, pole and meat 4/ Alan Parsons 11-1-0 skimmers, pole and maggot/pellet
Me ? No good, my skimmers were too small and could only find one of the better ones and a nice crucian. Ended up with 8 lb and oddly couldnt get a thing next to the lilies or under the bush, had all fish in open water at 11m Wraysbury again next week- attendance might be down a bit after last time..... |

Well, that was exciting...
July 29, Club Lake, Wraysbury Attendance down as expected to a dozen after the last grueller here, and think next time we might get to fish one bank each unless the carp and bream decide to start having a go. Just like three weeks ago, loads cruising about at distance but completely uninterested.
1/ Bob Hawes, 20-13, two carp and a bream, method and corn, peg 38 2/ Martin Harper, 3-8, two eels and four perch, pole and worm, peg 18 3/ Derek Turton 0-11, a few perch, waggler and maggot, 39 4/ Belinda Parsons 0-5, perch, 15
Pretty sure that everythings just feeding on the vast amount of natural food in the lake although an evening match would probably see a great improvement in results Spent just over half the match for one liner on the method and bomb into a nice 6 ft deep clear patch in the weed 30 yards out,at which point decided to eel it at 7m in 11 ft of water, but it was 45 minutes from the end before any turned up. Should have done a bit better as bumped two by hitting them too early and missed a couple of bites as well. Still, too far adrift of the winner for it to have made any difference |

August 5, Royal Berkshire Fishery A two horse race from adjacent pegs on the wide bit at the far end, As usual for here, needed to be within inches of the far side to catch consistently (or at all ) 1/ Kevin Burroughs 83-0, carp with a couple of bream, pellet waggler 2/ Lee White 78-13 as above 3/ Richard Smith 28-11 five carp, pellet feeder 4/ Graham Fox 23-10 carp on pellet wag and some roach on caster
Me ? Did utter cack; drew one of the narrower swims, one carp, prob the smallest in the lake at barely 2 lb,after half an hour tight to the bank at 16m, lost another an hour later and that was that apart from a few decent roach on 8 mil pellet.... Had a couple of 20 minute goes shallow on caster at 6m but the roach were too small. If had done it all day might have got close to 3rd or 4th but really didnt have enough caster with me to do it properly-ended up with 7-13 Might have been even tighter at the top if Lee hadnt missed the net with a carp- difficult trick to pull off when transferring the fish straight from landing net to keepnet but he managed it somehow ! |

August 12, R Cherwell,Northfields Farm A bit late with this one as had to miss it, shame as its just about my favourite of the clubs waters and we only have a couple of matches on it a season Very weedy at present and didnt really fish at its best with most finding it switch off after two hours or so, top two weights coming from down below the confluence with the R Ray 1/ Derek Turton 14-6, three chub plus roach and dace, wag and caster 2/ Brian Dart 8-11, roach and dace, wag and caster 3/ Don Wilkinson 6-0 roach and dace, stick and maggot 4/ Alan Parsons 4-7 as above

August 19, Riverside, Northwood Had to miss this one as well in the interests of domestic harmony, it being the other halfs birthday.... Like a few weeks ago here, sun on the shallow water didnt really help.Tench and crucians conspicuous by their absence, a couple of the big carp hooked and lost
1/ Kevin Burroughs 23-2 all skimmers, pole and pellet/ maggot 2/ Bob Hawes 12-7 skimmers and roach, waggler and maggot 3/ Graham Fox 10-8 skimmers, pole and pellet 4/ Richard Smith 10-1 skimmers, pole and meat |

Sept 2, Willows Lake, London Colney Better fish seemed concentrated in a few swims, with the skimmers being much smaller elsewhere. Loads of roach on the inside if you go for them
1/Richard Smith 42-12, two carp , half a dozen good bream plus skimmers, method and pellet/meat, peg 7 2/ Gary Young 28-5, half a dozen big skimmers early on, then about 17 lb of roach on caster at 4m, peg 10 3/ Graham Fox 22-3, bream and skimmers, feeder and pellet, peg 8 4/ Steve Hardy 20-14 bream and skimmers, method and pellet, peg 6
Me? Wrong bit , peg 16. Four small skimmers early on, then just the occasional roach on feeder and 8mil boilie ! Stayed on it too long, went waggler and maggot shallow for last two hours and had 10 lb of roach ending up with just short of 13 lb for an enjoyable day. |

Sept 9, R Colne, Uxbridge Moor
First match on our "new" stretch of the river, predictably more than a bit difficult in the worst possible Colne combination of a low clear river and bright sunshine...
1/ Keith Davidson 6-2-0 , a chub around 3 lb plus roach and dace, stick and maggot 2/ Derek Turton 6-0-0 roach and dace, waggler and caster 3/ Martin Harper 3-10-8 mostly roach, stick and caster 4/ Ashley Hammond 3-2-0 roach and perch, stick and maggot.
Match was more or less over for many after an hour or so when the sun got full on the water. After three hours all I had was a gudgeon, a tiny roach and a couple of minnows and didnt think it would get any better but late on started to pick up the odd reasonable roach on caster tight across on the stick. Amazed it was enough for third though |

Sept 23, with Twyford & Distrist, St Patricks Stream Had to miss this one, the "away leg" of our inter club with Twyford and looks like I missed a "Pats" well below its best with very few big fish showing and a distinct lack of the usual dace
1/ Pete Lewis (Twyford) 7-9 chublets perch and roach, stick and caster 2/ Kevin Burroughs (Gerrards X) 5-0 mostly a chub, stick and maggot 3/ John Green (Twyford)3-10 all bits 4/ Lee White (Gerrards X) 3-3 all bits.
The rain at the moment is much needed as everywhere down here running very clear. |

Sept 30, club lake, Wraysbury Attendance as expected well down after the last two results here- I said last time we might get to fish one bank each; well it wasnt quite that low, but still only 9 of us showed for another few hours of hopeful feeder-flinging... Big fish or bust, as usual;
1/ Don Wilkinson 21-6, two carp, method and maggot, peg 29 2/ Stuart Turk 20-3, three carp, method and maggot, peg 5 3/ John Barnes 7-7, one tench, method and maggot, peg 38
Me? Peg 15 on the deep bank. Not a touch. Spent most of the match on method out to the edge of the weed with a few looks on worm on a deep water line at 7m but probably a bit cold for the eels to feed and the bream have barely shown on the deep bank this season. Even had an abortive 5 minute look on a canal rig under the tree in the edge for a micro perch to give me an outside chance of the mystery weight sweep ! |

Had to work this weekend so didnt get to fish ; glad I missed this one...
Oct 7, R Thames, Goring River was expected to be coloured and up a bit but not this much. Absolutely hammering through and loads of debris coming down; river 2 ft up at least and obviously all the gates open to run it off. Virtually impossible to fish out in the flow with all the rubbish coming down and all the top 4 had only bits caught mostly right in the edge on bomb or pole
1/ Brian Dart 1-15-0 2/ Alan Parsons 1-1-0 3/ Belinda Parsons 0-9-8 4/ Kevin Burroughs 0-7-0 |

Oct 14, R Colne, Uxbridge Moor We thought our first match on this "new" stretch a month back was a bit hard. Little did we know....
1/ Derek Turton 3-8-0 mostly dace with a few roach, wag and mag 2/ Tony Carter 1-14-0 about 50 assorted not very big things, wag and mag 3/ Richard Smith 1-10-0 roach and perch, stick and maggot 4/ John Barnes 1-0-8, a few perch, pole and maggot
No sign of any better fish at all. Don Wilkinson did sit it out for big fish and did have a barbel but it went around 4oz !
Me ? Working again. I seem to have developed a decent 6th sense over which ones to miss... |

Oct 21, GUC Slough Arm, Langley Boats Canal has gone ridiculously clear, so much so that can sit at your peg, see how many and what species of fish are in front of you, and feed accordingly ! Most of the top weights at the far end towards Mansion Lane, and a struggle for many elsewhere
1/ Don Wilkinson 7-9-0 mainly roach with the odd rudd , alternating whip and waggler with punch, peg 1 2/ Kevin Burroughs 7-6-0 as above, peg 5 3/ Graham Fox 5-10-8 mostly perch on pole and bloodworm tight to the boats, peg 14 4/ Ashley Hammond 4-11, all roach, pole and punch, peg 4 |

Nov 4, GUC Slough Arm, Langley Boats, fished with Twyford Valley AS. 25 fished, a good bit fewer than expected probably due to the expected clarity and pegginess after a couple of earlier club matches. Heavy overnight rain had put a much needed tinge of colour in the canal and the weights were well up on last time, although the pegs at the Mansion Lane end remained the best draw with the top 4 almost in a line. Weights still pretty reasonable elsewhere with just the odd struggle in the area around the kissing gate. All weights of roach perch and rudd, on a mixture of baits, mainly pinkie and big maggot.Punch not quite as much to the fore today and at least one of the top 4 never even got the joker out of its wrapper.. 1/ Ian Randall (TVAS) 13-1-0 peg 2 2/ Brian Dart (GXUDAS) 11-15-0, peg 4 3/ Graham Fox (GXUDAS) 10-6-8, peg 3 4/ Kevin Smith (TVAS) 7-14-0 peg 6
Me? Bad bout of man-flu so missing again. Might actually get to fish one of these days... |

Nov 11, R Colne, Uxbridge Moor Originally was intended to be an inter club match on our "new" stretch of river but called off as werent sure we could fit enough pegs in. Some of us decided to have a knock up there anyway- good job we didnt invite another club as dont think we'd have been forgiven in a hurry ! Sunshine + frost + clear water + R Colne= hard work
1/ Bob Hawes 2-2-0 a dozen dace ,roach and perch, stick and maggot 2/ Derek Turton 1-13-0 twenty or so little dace and chublets 3/ Martin Harper 1-9-0 about 100 assorted micro roach, dace and minnows, stick and maggot/pinkie 4/ Don Wilkinson 0-10-0, micro roach and minnows
At least I kept busy ....

Nov 18, R Colne, Uxbridge First match of the season on our original bit of the Colne, but same probs as last week in that week of mild nights and cloud cover replaced last night by a sharp frost and sunny skies today. Not ideal...
1/ Derek Turton 10-0-0 mostly dace with a few perch and roach, wag and mag, peg 52 2/ Martin Harper 5-12-8, small roach and perch, stick/pole and maggot, peg 58 3/ Barry Abbott 4-1-0 assorted bits, stick and maggot, peg 47 4/ Brian Dart 2-15-0 all small roach, waggler and punch, peg 61
Not a single chub caught today and can't remember that happening in 25 years on here- most of the chub pegs today struggled for the odd little fish. Don't know where the better roach that usually show on 58 were today- only had two roach of about 2 oz each, one perch about half a pound and everything else was about 20/25 to the pound |

Dec 9, R Colne, Uxbridge Thankfully a good bit of cloud cover today and the river fished a lot better with a lot of small fish showing on the backstream pegs .
1/ Wally Thomas 13-10-0, four chub and a few bits, feeder and maggot, peg 11 2/ Lol Charlton 8-4-0, two chub, pole and maggot, peg 46 3/ Martin Harper 7-10-8, mostly small roach and dace with a few chublets, waggler and punch/maggot, peg 55 4/ Brian Dart 6-14-0 all roach, stick and punch, peg 61
Had just short of a hundred fish for my weight - started on punch but switched to maggot after an hour or so as the punch fish were so small ,started picking up a few dace and the odd little two ounce chub in amongst the roach , and then a few better roach in the last half hour the light dropped . Had the customary single rudd from peg 55 as well, about an ounce. Quite why a few of them seem to live in one of the faster and shallowest swims on the fishery is a mystery- never seem to get them anywhere else |

Dec 16, Fur & Feather, R Colne, Uxbridge
What a difference a week makes. River about the same level as last week but much pacier and a nasty colour suggesting that Friday's rain had put all the road salt and washings in. Generally with extra water the backsteam and sluice (51 to 61, 1 to 9) is the better draw- last week bottom weight from the backstream was 4-5, this week top weight from it was, by some distance, 4-4 with only one in three catching in the sluice. Odd chub in the last hour from the main river made things look a bit more respectable.
1/ Richard Smith 9-14, two chub, one on waggler one on feeder with maggot, peg 11. Bigger chub went 6-8-8, both in last hour 2/ Don Wilkinson 5-1-0 one chub, stick and maggot with 15 mins to go, peg 47 3/ Lol Charlton 4-11-8, one chub, stick and maggot, peg 42 4/ Stuart Turk 4-4-0 roach and dace, waggler and punch, peg 52
Me ? Peg 57A at the top of the shallows. Lovely swim if the dace are there. They weren't. Three little roach for 0-1-8, lost a chub about a pound and a half with 20 minutes to go and that was it, four bites all day.
Richard's chub of 6-8-8 amazingly wasn't necessarily the best specimen of the day. Terry Burgess on 13 had a bullhead of an ounce and a half ! |

A quick update- just found out from a quick google that Terry's bullhead was in excess of the British Record. Not really sure how much publicity we should give this as would hate to see the fishery overrun by record chasers..... |

Jan 6, GUC Slough Arm, Langley Boats
Couldn't fish this one myself unfortunately, but took a walk up for the last hour and to help on scales.
Canal generally below par, level down a bit for some reason and, despite all the rain we've had, very clear until the only boat of the day came through with an hour to go. Fish seem to have spread out and moved a bit since before Xmas, with the fancied far end peg at Mansion Lane only producing ounces, the next few not being a great deal better with nobody over 2 lb, and the average size of fish also being noticeably bigger as you came back towards the gate.
1/ Derek Turton 6-15-0, about 60 roach and rudd, waggler and pinkie or maggot 2/ Brian Dart 4-5-8, about 100 small roach, mainly on pole and punch 3/ Kevin Burroughs 4-2-0 mostly perch on long pole and joker 4=/ Stuart Turk and Bob Hawes, both 3-9-0, both mostly roach on pole and punch
One inexplicable biteless blank in the middle of the length. Pretty decent canal angler as well, with 4-2 one side of him and 2-8-8 the other ?!
A couple of early skimmers caught (don't usually see them here from November to March).
Good to see a canal match won on the running line. Pretty rare these days, even here on the Arm where a few of the regulars will generally have a waggler rig set up for rudd chasing. |
