Just had a couple of days on Bonds at Bury Hills.
On peg 8, I started off with an open ended feeder across to the island - mix of mico & 3mm swin stim + hemp, corn and some flavouring with a 8mm halibut pellet banded to a size 12. Picked up a couple of small fish straight away (c.5lb)... one which raced off whilst I was setting my waggler rod up - fortunately I'd flicked the free spool on.
I'd been feeding the right hand margin since I arrived, and when bites dried up on the feeder I switched over to this area with a small waggler and again, a banded 8mm halibut pellet.
Started getting bites immediately, and after getting broken off a couple of times I started to get a feel for how hard I could push my new pellet waggler rod and 6lb line/hook length.
The next fish was a bit of a milestone... after a long fight I landed a 13lb 12oz mirror... my 1st ever double Though this was somewhat less satisfying as I'd foul hooked it in the anal fin. Next cast I hooked something that took off like a bullet and fought like a mad thing. A good 10 minutes later I eventually got it in the net... a 14lb 6oz common... and hooked in the mouth this time
Fished through to 6.30 and ended up with 17 fish, most over 8lb.
Went again today, same peg, same tactics - though the margin was fairly quiet until late afternoon and the feeder was more effective... only one double today (11lb 4oz), but finished with 19 in total, most in the 7-9lb range.
I can't help feeling that the tactics most people are using to fish the lake are a bit of overkill... carp rods and bite alarms seem a bit much for fish averaging under 10lb... 6lb line and a feeder/pellet waggler rod make landing fish a great challenge. This afternoon I saw a c.12 y/o girl land a decent sized fish using what looked like a £50 pole (with lots of advice from dad) - she was extatic
Some photos of the better fish...

| Great report and a fantastic session well done, hope I do half as well tomorrow! Oh I agree with lighter rods and feeder/waggler tackle as well. Great fun. |

Thanks :)
If you're fishing the margins keep a hand on your rod at all times... on a couple of occassions I cast in, wound back over the area I was fishing, reached down to grab a few pellets to throw round my float and as I did a fish took the bait on the drop and nearly pulled my rod in... if I hadn't had the butt across my lap I might have lost it.
Hope you have a good day. |

Good result there mate, nice pics too, no mouth damage on any of those carp
Only fished Bonds once and agree about most people being OTT with carp gear on such a small lake, but each to their own I guess. |

Set off with the intention of fishing Miltons Saturday morning, but there was a match on, so decided to give Bonds a go.
I was also trying Skrettings pellets out for the 1st time - picked up 25kg of 2.3mm in readiness for a weeks fishing holiday at the end of the month and wanted to get test the soak time as I've read they can be a bit variable. They were perfect with a 2 minute soak and a spoon of sticky pellet. Stayed soft and springy all day... and around 1/4 the price of my usual swimstim pellets.
I fished peg 8 to the end of the island... it's my favorite peg, but not easy to fish anymore as although they have cut the trees back a bit at water level, they still overhang a good distance, making casting tight very tricky... and you need to cast within a few feet or you get no bites.
I was set up and fishing by 6.30am (soft 10ft bomb rod, 6lb line, preston method, 4" hook length, sz 14, haired corn) and spent the 1st 15 minutes getting my casting right (distance is no problem, but the angle is critical to avoid the trees) and getting some bait out there by double filling the mould.
Tip pulled round for the 1st time just after 6.45 and after a decent fight, a nice 7lb common in the net. Straight back out and another pull within a couple of minutes of the feeder hitting the water - another common around 6lb. The next hour and half was brilliant - 14 fish, all between 5 and 8lb. Slowed a bit after that, but I caught steadily for the rest of the day, never going more than 20-30 minutes without a fish.
I was a bit lucky in one respect - the lake was very quiet so when bites under the trees dried up I could cast along the right side of the Island tight to some reeds. This wouldn't normally be possible if the lake was busy as I'd be casting in to other people swims, but this area turned out to be productive through the afternoon.
Packed up when I ran out of pellets at half four having caught 41 carp and a solitary roach.
Have some pics on my Blackberry which I'll try and upload when I can find my cable. |

Hmmmm, if it is I didn't know. I was chatting to the baliff early afternoon and I told him what I was using... he never said anything about the method being banned.
I'll check.
Edit: Just had a look at the web site, and yes, method feeders are banned (oops!). Strange, as it's not listed on the rules board at Buryhills and the baliff said nothing. I'll avoid using them in future. |
