Hi Deano - the Wyrley & Essington is still 'open' - the close season applies to the adjoining Cannock Extension Canal http://www.maggotdrowning.com/forum...PIC_ID=63653 which shoots off north from the W&E on Pelsall Common
I'll pm you details |

Heard some good reports during the week, but it was a bit slower this morning when I popped to see how the match was going..........a few were struggling
But whilst I was there, one chap's no 14 latex was all across the cut as a tinca took refuge in the sedges opposite, another guy was seen off, but this guy landed a 4lb'er

No tincas showing this morning whilst I popped down for half hour to see how the match was fairing......in truth it was a 'bit slow' .........although these couple of anglers were putting a few together.....

| Thinking ive going here tommorow for pleasure fishing.Havent fished it before so just a few questions,is the any bans? can i buy a day ticket? and whats the best bait? im thinking ive using some groundbait and maggots or pellets on the hook. Also what is the best rig to use?, I was going to go for 8 elastic,18 hook,2.5lb line and a basic pole float. |

Hi Youngfisherman - sorry for the late response. No bait bans. If I pop along and 'catch you' lol, yes a day ticket is available, £1 - although most people have a season ticket off me as they are only £5 for the year. There's no magical baits - you shoud catch on the mag over g/b - and if any tincas or bream are in the vicinity they are partial to a pellet The rig sounds fine for the tincas - just set it 'soft' to avoid bouncing the silvers off. Hope you have a few tugs |

| Was rubbish today, got there for about 9ish fished the right hand side of wood lane inbeetween the bridge and the feild. Not long after setting up i caught a roach which was fish to hand size then my dad caught one the same and about 10mins after he caught a little skimmer which agian was fish to hand.About an hour after setting up alot of reeds came down the canal which really screwd things up for both of us but more so my dad as he was on the road and reel.So after about two hours of reeds comming down the canal we decided to move further down the canal nearer the feild. After about 5 or 10mins of setting up agian the reeds came down agian but worse and our last swim was now free of weeds.I managed to get my rig tangled on some reeds which i had to change. Then while trying to dodge the reeds i manged to get my hook into some vegetation at the bottom of the canal, after this we both packed up and went home about 2ish.The rig i used was the one i said i was going to use and i used maggots single and double i also used a pellet at the end and i threw abit of groundbait in every so often as well.Spoke to a few people and they said it used to be good but since they have dug up the bottom and cut the reeds most of the fish have gone.I might consider going agian but i want to try out the cannock extention as they said that was good. |

I did briefly speak to you young fisherman, whilst you and your father were struggling amongst all those floating reeds, Sorry to hear the fish were not playing ball.......I took a picture or two of you

Just past where you fished, I received a report on Thursday from two of our members who both caught skimmers and tench. One fished the punch, the other the pellet.....

Myself and my partner also fished the canal yesterday. We fished on the common. There was some cut reeds floating down the cut on a naughty skimming breeze, but it didn't affect the fishing one bit. Just a bit more care when shipping out led to us both catching Skimmers and Roach. I was bagging on some quality Roach for the last half hour before we had to pack up and leave. Message for "young fisherman".....dont give up on the canal cos someone says the fish have gone, thats not true. Cashmores have a match on there next Saturday so why dont you come along and see how the "regulars" fish it. You will be surprised how good this stretch of canal can be |

Nice one MrV - sounds like you are the man again to beat on Saturday

As MrV suggests, if you get half hour, pop and have a look at an angler or two on our club match on Saturday.
Those floating reeds on the morning were obviously a nuisance, but some of the 'advice' you heard was 'cods whallop' young fisherman. Two or three years ago these was some limited spot dredging along a 5 or 6 mile stretch of the Wyrley & Essington canal - all the way back to Walsall.........the bottom was never 'dug up'. And since then there's been quite a few massive pleasure hauls along the section.
Being a 'natural' venue, the canal can have it's good and difficult days - it's not always 'easy'. Catch it right and you can have a red letter day, but sometimes more subtle approaches are needed for it to reveal what it holds.
My best advice for starters is plumb up and find the bottom of the inside and far side shelf- usually about 4 and 8/9 mtrs dependent on peg.The same rig will generally work for both lines.
If using pinkie or maggot, feed both of these lines regularly, but sparingly - a 1/4pint of pinkie and 1/4pint of caster will usually last me a match
Sometimes the fish on that longer line 'back off' and you have to chase them up the shelf into slightly shallower water
Same applies to the Cannock Extension Canal. But just a reminder in case you were not aware, that canal is currently closed for angling as it is a designated SSSI, so you wont be able to visit it until June 16th
If you need any info about either canal, dont hesitate to pm me and I'll try to help you and put you on a few fish |

MrV - Looks like The Hunter and Colin might be the guys to beat this week.........
Both had another session yesterday along the Common with Col just 'edging it' over the Hunters bag of skimmers and roach with a proper 6lb bream, 3.5lb tinca and a load of 12oz - 1lb skimmers |
