Lives, breathes and sleeps fishing.

Last week I decided to purchase a season ticket for the Earl of Harrington stretch of the River Derwent. I'd been looking at this ticket for a couple of years now and after having a couple of succesful day ticket sessions on the river I thought I'd take the plunge this year. At £25 plus £5 for the gate key, it gives me access to a fair few miles of the Derwent where anything from 15lb Barbel to 4lb Perch have been caught. Theres also a couple of stillwater's too, although this isn't why I bought the ticket.
Last night I decided to give my new ticket a try. After another hopelessly pathetic day on a Notts AA stillwater (pathetic apart from the fact I met george_smith of here, a very nice guy!), I decided to swap my coarse gear for barbel gear and head to the Derwent. I got there about 5:30pm and to my surprise the water was up by about 2 feet and very coloured. I say surprise as I crossed over the Derwent on Friday evening and despite all Thursday and Friday's rain the river was pretty much as normal. It appears it took all the rain a good day or so to reach the river.
Anyway I settled on a spot and started fishing, casting to a fallen tree. I hardly had time to prepare for the session so just had a few pellets, a tin of meat and some sweetcorn with me. I cast in a bit of meat and threw in a few handfuls of bait and waited. Third cast and after a 15 minute wait I had a few indications on the tip, which was very positive as it told me fish were there. Then suddenly, whack as the tip went round. I wasn't quite alert and I only just managed to grab the rod as it was heading in to the river! I picked it up and was met by a heavy resistance and a full arc in my rod. I had to put maxmimum pressure on the fish as it was trying to get under the tree. I managed to get it out and it surfaced straight away, which seemed strange, and then all of a sudden the 9lb hooklength went. I was gutted! At least I saw the fish and it was a good sized Barbel approaching 10lb I would say.
Anyway, I baited up again and cast in. After alternating through a few hook baits I finally had another take. This time it headed upstream, away from the snags. I'd also beefed up a little to a 10lb hooklength. After a spirited fight, including a worrying 2 minute stalemate in a snag, I got it to the surface and slipped the landing net underneath. Overjoyed was an understatement. I can honestly say I've had no better feeling when fishing than catching a river Barbel. It tipped the scales at 8lb 7oz, nearly 1lb more than my previous best.
A move to another swim produced nothing and a last minute return to my succesful swim saw me frustratingly miss a bite. Anyhow, a very enjoyable evening and I'm hoping this is the start of many to come.

A barbel angler told me he used to night fish at Gunthorpe on the Trent and had good success with a fair few doubles falling to halibut pellets.
Was 2 years ago so things may have changed. |

| To be honest with you I've seen plenty of people night fishing Notts AA waters. First one that springs to mind is East Stoke, not sure if it's ever seen a bailiff! |

Hmmm, good point, I've not actually renewed yet! If it weren't for my new found passion for the river, I wouldn't bother with Notts AA to be honest. Saying that, LEVAS has a couple of good Trent stretches, one of which being the closest stretch of Trent to me for £25.
And for £35 it's always nice to have the versitility of Notts AA to fall back on. |

Well next time you're planning a trip let me know mate, I'll definately pop down to see how you're doing. to be honest mate it was spending the few days at sowbrook the other week that made me renew. me and the mrs love night fishing but dont want to spend a fortune to fish friday until sunday as often as we can. when we both fish it soon adds up mate, just for the weekend at smeatons lake it adds up to nearly 60 quid not including bait etc. the sowbrook crowd are really friendly and not shy with information if asked |

Nice one Dave a decent session for you on my local river mate. You want to send your pictures and catch report to the Earl of Harrington website mate or their facebook page. They've just started them again and no doubt would love to receive something like this from you! Well done again |
