Lough Derg 2012 report Well another annual trip to Derg has been and gone and it was another one to remember. The crossing over from Hollyhead to Dublin was as smooth as ice, but the conditions were going to change. This year my 9 year old son ( Alfie )came for his first time and he loved it. After traveling all night we arrived at the digs in Tipperary at about 10am and had the usual worm welcome from the owners of the self catering cabin we were staying at. The sun was out and little wind, it was lovely. We didnt waste any time and got on the boat complete with fish finder to check out the depths and to see if the fish were in the area. This is when we had a nasty surprise. There were hardley any fish showing up on the finder and we were thinking the worst. Where were the fish ? It was very starnge but we knew the weather was going to change with a south south westerly wind heading our way for the next 3 days. We decidied to bait up our usual place which hasnt let us down before and hope for the best. The next morning we took the short boat ride to our spot and was met by the warm south winds blowing straight into our bank, tackled up the feeder rods and cast out over the pre baited area. Alfie , who hasnt feeder fished before had his rod pulled in on the first cast and was into the first fish of the day. It was such a great feeling, not only had the pre baiting worked but to see Alfie catching from Derg was amazing. Alfie and i were fishing the same peg, casting out to a marker and my dad was about 50 yards away also on the feeder. The winds were really blowing and making it very hard for Alfie , so i had to do all his casting and try and keep an eye on his tip too. We were catching on and off all day , which was exactly what we wanted and finished the day with Alfie bagging 40 pounds me with 68 pounds and my dad with 106 pounds.Roach to just under 2 pounds, Hybrids to 3 pounds and Bream to 6 pounds. We pre baited again and went back for some waggler fishing around the quay . We set up a simple float rig and Alfie started to catch hand size roach , great fun. It was hard work fishing in the wind and we kept on telling Alfie that the wind would calm down for the next day which would make life easier for him. We were wrong. The next day the winds were still blowing and they got stronger and stronger. We decided that me and Alfie would fish the same rod, taking it in turns . There was no point letting him sit there and struggle. We were all straight into fish from the off again , but with the waves crashing onto the line and weed being stured up it was again to be hard work. The rain felt like it was missing out so decided to say hello too, giving us all a good soaking. We finished the day with me and Alfie bagging 46 pounds and my dad with 83 pounds. We think the fish wernt there at the start because of the north winds which Derg had had and the lake was down by about a foot too . Once the winds changed, the fish followed . Looks like our friends the FN's are starting to go home and the ones that are left are fishing the right way, which is good news. I think the local irish people delt with them in their own way and its worked. Another good session on Lough Derg and already planning for next year.

| Well done Drakey...great report...always good to hear some positive comments despite the poopy weather. Most of the East Clare lakes are very high...2 to 3 feet up. Fortunately Derg is controlled by a dam near O'Briens Bridge so the water levels always appear normal even in the worst of weather. And you're right about the FN problem...while it's still an issue and hasn't gone away it's certainly not as bad as 4 or 5 years ago...a lot have gone home and others are beginning to comply with the rules...very slowly though. |

| Drakey you need to invest on a sidewinder for Alphie and yourself as they do not move unless you get a bite no matter how strong the winds are or how high the waves are, best piece of kit i have bought in all my fishing days. Perfect for IRELAND. |
