Well Today 20th January we had our first "outing" of the New Year.
We thought we would stay Local, so a visit to the Leeds & Liverpool Canal was in order. Before I left home, I sneaked a look at the "Moonstrike Chart" and the "moon set time" etc. It promised a "good" day under favourable conditions, so we were hopeful. The weather was quite mild for the time of year, and only a light breeze from a Westerly direction, not even enough to put a ripple on the water.
So, poles at the ready, about ten meters apart, we are off. Size 23 canal fine special (spade end) to .8 fluorocarbon, that's a laugh, didn't have my "glasses" with me, but determined to tie the thing (by hand, can't use a machine), if only I could find the hook I might be in with a chance. Once I had retrieved the hook from behind my thumbnail, I did manage to tie the thing, I don't know what the "knot" was like I couldn't see it. Pinkies and "liquidised bread", chopped worm, gently, gently, I'm telling myself, not too much, little and often, this is January and it's a canal. After the first hour of "counting Pinkies" in the cup, and counting the "breadcrumbs" I was cupping in,..............the float, absolutely ......"BURIED ITSELF", as fast as any "Dace" bite.....I thought ....YES,....."FISH ON". Expecting the elastic to shoot out of the pole tip, no...."you've missed it Dave", I thought to myself. BUT no...there's something on my single bronze maggot, (I think), yes "almost a Perch"

RED LEADER, I THINK THIS FISH BELONGS TO YOU !!
That was that untill about 2.10 when I had 2 very shy "dibbles".
Sue sat to my right had been quietly "plodding" on, steadily doing nothing. That was untill 2.15, when the "landing net was slid under a rather solid looking Perch (slightly) larger than mine, that had stretched her elastic a little.
"I'm beating you now" came the cry !! Well (only just)!!.
This is Sue's (little) Perch

She only had the barefaced affrontery to get ANOTHER (slightly) larger than mine, five minutes later. (I don't think I'll take her again, if she's going to beat me).
Of course, I'm only joking, after all she had a "GOOD TEACHER"..............ME !!
Never mind there's always next time, anyway 3 points each for the "fish race".
If anyone was wondering about the "moonstrike" thingy, "moonset" for today was ........14.18 !!!
Makes you think don't it ??
catch you later, tight lines, dave....

David, perhaps you should spend more time looking at your float, rather than the moon

I was supposed to be having a day on the river today and after checking the EA river line made the 40-odd mile trip to Spennithorne on the River Ure. It's funny how '0.30m over normal summer level and steady' doesn't seem much on the phone but on a river thats normally only three feet deep its a hell of a lot . The river was fishable (just) but I didn't really fancy it so I drove down to Thornaby AC's stretch of the Ure at Kilgram Bridge - unfortunately it was the same story down there. I decided to admit defeat regarding river fishing and decided to have an afternoon at Dromonby Farm nr Great Broughton.
I'd only fished there once before (April last year) and considering the hard frost on Saturday night I wasn't too hopeful. Not surprisingly I was the only one on the pond. It's a very open and windswept place and not having fished it in the winter before I decided to opt for comfort and fish with the wind off my back at the car-park end of the lake. This was the view across the lake from the peg I fished.

Plumbed up and found four foot from 7m to 13m, so decided to fish at 10m. I potted in a cup of chopped worm and a few micro-pellets, with half a dendrobena on the hook. First put in I caught this:
How it got the worm in its gob I'll never know
I caught small rudd at intervals (mainly on the drop) but there was no sign of the hoped-for carp. There were small fish topping all over the lake but nothing of any size, until there was a BIG swirl in the margins to my right. I hastily plumbed up and found 18" of water, so went over there straight away.I fished single maggot on the hook and there were obvious signs of activity straight away, the float knocking and dipping.
I finally got a 'proper' bite, struck, only to find another little rudd on the end. I went back over the same spot, got another decent bite straight away and this time hooked something substantial - unfortunately I think it was foul-hooked since it came off after only a few seconds. I think that spooked the rest of the fish in the margins because I couldn't get another bite.
I ended up with about twenty little rudd, not a marvellous days fishing but at least I got a few bites - I don't think I'd have got as many bites on the river (although the fish probably would have been a little larger)

Sunday 25th Jan 04, Susie Q opts to "have a go" against the "big boys", 15 experienced "River Anglers". Draw 09.30 and I should have realised there and then that it was "curtains" for me when "golden hand" draws out a peg that I myself dug out 3 years ago, because of what it contained.
After showing her to "the peg", I left her to get on with it, and I went to find mine.
My first cast, and within minutes the "tip" went round, the clutch on the reel started singing and I thought YES ! ALAS, It was a trout of about two pound, don't count !!
About an hour later my little two way "walkie-talkie" squawked, it was Sue...."I've got one.......it's a chub". Good, I'm pleased for you love, I said. What I really thought was more...like...
That blasted "walkie-talkie" kept squawking "results" to me all day, "another trout", or "it's a chub" and here I am still trying for a "PROPER" fish. I am under pressure !!
Then as if to try and "CHEER ME UP" Sue called me again on the 2 way, and said "I've FALLEN IN THE WATER", whilst putting ANOTHER trout back the bank gave way........she is still doing the "HOKEY COKEY, YOU PUT YOUR RIGHT LEG IN..... AND SHAKE IT ALL ABOUT "
Total for Sue, 3 trout, 2 chub, hook pulled out of 2, missed a half dozen bites, and weighed in with 2 chub for 2lb.4oz (overall 5th) OH DEAR JUST OUT OF THE FRAME

I could only manage a "minnow", untill 3minutes from "whistle" at last a CHUB, but only 1lb 10oz. I was under pressure all day !
So all in all, an Excellent day for Sue and for me "beaten twice in a week by my own PRODIGY".
I know what it feels like now to be beaten on my "home water"...........FISKY CAN I JOIN YOUR CLUB ?? Lol.
catch you later, tight lines, dave....

So off down to Harleylands for our Supercup match this morning. On the way down in the car and the outside temp is reading -2°C,and the fields are so white with frost that it looks as if it had snowed. On arriving at the fishery the temp has risen to a stunning 0°C but there doesn't appear to be any signs of frost! There's a bright blue sky and just a gentle breeze. The water temp is 4°C.
Into the draw, and i find myself making my way to peg 20,with a leasurely 1½hrs till the start of the match.
Peg 20,Looks lovely doesn't it?......

Well i've been told that feeder (either maggot or groundbait) with a ·08 hooklength and a 22 with single red maggot is the way to go dropped about a metre away from the island, so that gets set up 1st. Can't resist setting up the pole as well and the main line of attack will be at 13mtrs where i've got 5ft,using a ·6grm Drennan Lake with a ·07 hooklength and a 22 again.Through the top2 i've got the new Drennan green dual core (6-8) set soft,as i'm expecting stockies no bigger than 12ozs max.
All in,and after cupping in a few micro pellets and a small amount of dry groundbait on the pole line,it's out on the feeder. Well it wasn't happening for me but the lad to my left on peg 21 is catching steadily from the off while i can't buy a bite, but all the time i've been feeding 2-3 maggots every couple of minutes on the pole line.
After ½hr it's out onto the pole line and after 10mins the float dips, and i'm into a carp at last, not huge at about 6ozs but at least it's a fish.Another 20mins and not another bite,so back onto the feeder and manage another couple and that's the way it went nearly all match for me.Even a pep talk from Red Leader had no effect other than to lighten the mood.
Well with about ¾hr to go I'm being battered by the next peg,i reckon he must have 20+lbs while i've got abour 6lbs if i'm lucky. Back out on the pole once more and they're there and in the last 45 minutes I manage a fish a chuck. Why couldn't they have turned up earlier.
Come the weigh-in and the lad to my left puts 22lbs 2ozs on the scales which easily eclipses my 13lbs 9ozs. The match is won by Medway Tackle (blue) by 14pts to 10pts,so that's us knocked out for another season.
Overall the 16 of us weighed in 235lbs 6 ozs,an average of over 14½lbs per man, which i feel given the conditions just goes to show what a good fishery Harleylands is to produce those sort of weights on a hard January day.

Teepee, no it wasn't your special bait that you gave me yesterday at the Willows, it was PURE SKILL LUCK AND MY BRILLIANCE LOL Your special bait may have helped a little, THANKS, TONY !!
I felt fine untill the bank gave way under me and I slid into the water. I had my moonboots and thermal bib'n'brace suit on, not reccomended for swimwear !! After that I was shaking so much, my feeder arm was bouncing all over, and I'm sure I missed a couple of bites.
I think I had one or two of the men worried as word got around that I'd had a couple of chub. I was running third untill the scales went over the river to weigh the last couple of pegs on the other bank. There were only ounces between 3rd 4th 5th.

Woke up at 6.30, the sound of the wind had died down so bags packed and off to Seven Oaks. I had arranged to text Neo-1 (Nick) and DaiFish if I was going, unfortunately Dai was not feeling well but Nick text me back saying he would meet me there.
With the wind still gusting quite strongly I decided to set up two feeder rods (you missed that Dai) with maggot feeders with sweetcorn and maggot on the hook. Nothing very substantial came to these rods, four small carp and five roach of about 4 ounces.
Nick had the first fairly decent fish of the day, a common of about 4 lb.

At about half one the wind dropped so I set up my pole and proceeded to miss bite after bite until I managed to lassoo this 6lb 8oz mirror.

Not long after the heavens opened and Nick and myself packed up said our farewells. Nice to meet you Nick and I look forward to the next day out, hopefully Dai can make that one.
Notice I didn't mention you trying to litter the lake with umbrellas and redundant seat boxes.

Yesterday I fished the Oaks at Sessay, N Yorks, on a sneaky practice session for the MD match there in 2 weeks
I set up on Alders peg 36. I set up my new matchbox, and other tackle and bait, then put the pole up. I fed, and started fishing at approx 10.30am......
....At 3pm I stopped fishing, admired what I'd caught, returned them, packed up, then went home.

The dawn broke on Sun day 8th February as I made my way to Seven Oaks fishery, Pontyclun where I was to meet sapachris, Neo-1 and a couple of guys from Swansea, Paul and Brian.
Unfortunately Neo-1 had a migraine attack and was unable to make it but he didn’t miss much.
I set up a maggot feeder to fish approximately 25 metres out (look Dai a feeder rod again) and this rod bagged me two small common carp. My other method was pole fishing pellet, maggot or sweetcorn over one cup of halibut pellets at 10 metres. It took a time to get the fish feeding on this line but eventually I managed to start catching skimmers and rudd to about half a pound.
Meanwhile sapachris was catching steadily all day. A succession of skimmers, roach and rudd finding their way into his landing net. He also bagged one nice mirror of about 7lb. This fish led him quite a dance on 8 elastic. It went through my swim and picked up my rig. When Chris finally managed to net it, we noticed it was foul hooked with Chris’s hook just by the gill. In fact my hook was closer to the mouth of the fish than Chris’s so can I claim a moral catch there?
The weather forecast was wrong as usual, not the sunny day as promised and with the wind gusting quite strongly at times. Still it was great to be by the bank and I enjoyed the chance to meet another maggotdrowner. See you on 21st February Chris.

Hi
Crickey, I think the person I briefy spoke to in car park yesterday was you.
I had come over late afternoon to bank walk as I am going there tomorrow. I was talking to a guy from Swansea - he had a green Asda fleece on - a nice bloke. I helped get his gear back to his car.
I was the shaven headed bloke with a white arran jumper - we briefly mentioned some place up Twekesbury you guys were going to. I said that I thought it was Hill view - if it is you willhave a good day plenty of bites - pasty sized carp.
I have had some great days down 7oaks in recent months - a number of 100lb plus catches. I am sure that tomorrow will be different with the frost this morning.
I fish mid week mostly as I have to sort my kids out on the weekend.
I have a job where I get a day off mid week so thats when I go fishing
I had a walk around Tri Nant before dropping over 7 oaks and there were only 2 lads fishing there but the wind was cutting cross badly and things werent going well.

Thats right Chris, I was (the nice guy)standing the Fiat. If you had noticed my box it had a MaggotDrowners skicker on the base.
What days during the week do you normally fish Seven Oaks? I tend to stay nearer Swansea during the week and venture further afield on Sundays.
I am not sure what the fishery we are going to on 21st Feb is called. Perhaps sapachris can tell us.
Look forward to meeting up again.

Tends to vary a lot as I have to work around the boys sporting comittments - I have to run him around the place.
Do you know the site name of the guy I mentioned from Swansea - seemed a nice guy, besides which I insisted that place you were going to up by Tweksbury was HillView - having looked at pics of the place elswhere on the site I can see it is not - I had better tell him.
Incidently, have you guys tried other commercials in the cardiff and surrounding areas such as Warren Mill, Dyffryn Springs and Riversides.
Cefn Mabley also has a good regular following and I have good days there and others not so good so I would hesitate to recommend it.its ceratinly not so consistent as 7oaks.
I havent mentioned Tri Nant and Hazel Court as I know you guys already go there. |

Thank you Alan, just when I thought you were getting quite likeable.
Chris, Brian was the guy in the green fleece and Paul is his chauffeur. They are not on the internet yet. I think Paul is getting a computer in the next few weeks.
I have tried Cefn Mabley and was not too impressed with it.
I will have to have a word with my intrepid buddies Daifish and Neo-1 about trying the other places.
Catch you later.
