As promised to David senior, my report on todays fishing of the Belmont stretch of the river wye Hereford.

I parked at the leisure pool car park arriving dead on 10.00am as my wife was meeting her freind. I hadn't managed to find out anything about the fishing in Hereford but assumed that a walk to Woody's Angling centre would maybe point me in the right direction. I explained that I wanted to fish for Barbel and Dave Who was looking after the shop told me that he'd heard of someone catching 11 Barbel down by the tennis courts the previous day. He told me to park at the leisure pool car park (as luck would have it I already had.lol) Dave told me to walk over the playing field to where there was a bridge below the bridge I would see some rapids and below them was a good spot to try.Day tickets were £5 for this stretch sun up til sundown.Kids were a bit of a problem as it was holidays in Hereford for them but on the whole they were polite and didn't want to cause problems but just watch. Also boats came down stream or three lots of them did but they weren't a problem either, they stayed wide and out of the way, even saying hello on the way past.

My swim

Upstream

Downstream

I'd never caught a Barbel from the wye and I was hoping for one today no matter how big, first cast in and the rod tip started to quiver then settled followed by strightening of the rod tip as the bait was picked up, for some reason I couldn't hit these bites but a quick text to Dave senior told me to take up the slack and then strike. I was just replying when the rod wrapped round, I threw my mobile and struck into a big fish only to feel the line grinding on rocks, the line soon went and away goes my first wye Barbel. I sent a text back to Dave senior telling him and I was gutted.

I decided that maybe the weight I had on was too much and thought it best to change to a feeder. I filled the feeder with small halibut pellet, enlarged the holes with scissors to help the pellet escape easier and put a 12mm halibut pellet on a hair rig with a size 8 raptor hook.

It worked a treat, no more than twenty seconds after the splosh of the feeder and the rod went "berzerk" I knew now that there was a schole of Barbel on the feed. The tip bowed an approving knod and I was into a wye Barbel around the 2lb mark. With the flow and snags here and there it fought more like a six pounder but soon tired and came to the net.
A portly little Barbel around 2lb

I unhooked him in the water and waited for him to recover, I didn't bother weighing any of the fish as I'd neglected to take an unhooking mat.

The bites kept coming thick and fast on the feeder and soon my second wye Barbel came in to the net.

number three on it's way in

number four

number five

number six I forgot to take a photo of but it soaked me, probably because I'd foul hooked it in the dorsal fin, how I'll never know as I had never done that before.

Lastly number 7 photo, courtesy of my lovely wife Amanda who had great pleasure in pointing out that I'd never caught a fish whilst she was watching.

I realy enjoyed the day and I hope I've suceeded in making Cleggy,Norah,Roachie, Roachette's mouth's water as this is a taste of what will be on offer when they arrive for their stay early in july.

I'll send you directions via pm cleggy. it couldn't be simpler and it took less than an hour to get home eventhough it was rush hour in Hereford.

Sorry, I got carried away and anyway you're one of the more knowledgeable on Maggotdrowners so you have to take us youngsters under your wing and give us some pointers.LOL

The Barbel I caught weren't that big, I think the biggest was between four and five pounds but they kept me busy all day. I asked about the roach for you and was told that they tend to congregate in the town stretches in the winter but in the summer it's anyone's guess as to where they are. There were loads of minnow around my feet as I fished, so plenty of food fish, perch are big in there and the chub were a nuisance too.

But what a river though, I fished from 11.ooam till 3.45pm so only four and three quarter hours and caught 7 Barbel.

Next time you go Moc give me a shout and I'll accompany you, I haven't had a wye pike either.

I was using small pellets in the feeder(halibut) with a large one(12mm) hair rigged.

Moc, where is Sue's tackle shop from the leisure pool car park as I walked all the way back to Woody's up at white-cross from the car park which was probably about a mile in all?

As soon as possible Graham, although I have a few things tying me to here for the moment, as soon as they're out of the way I'll text you to see when you are going next.

Pikey, if you go into hereford from the belmont end and turn left towards brecon then woody's angling is up there on your left about 200yards but you'll need to park in sainsburys car park a little further up. Walk back to woody's and get a ticket for the hereford and district angling association waters £5 per day. Then drive back towards belmont turn left at the traffic lights at belmont end of hereford and park in the swimming pool car park £4 per day to park. All you have to do then is walk over where they have just put some new footpaths in down towards the tennis courts, follow the river down and pick your swim, barbel are prolific right the way down this stretch with chances of pike, perch, chub and roach too. No live baiting for pike as it is banned down there.

Hope this helps

max sues tackle shop is at the end of the path that leads away from the river at the side of the lesuire pool its about 2 mins walk away
and yes next time we are down i will give you a shout though normaly i get vy little notice of when we are going like this time was told at 9pm on thursday that we were on the 8:30 train from manchester on friday

you can also get to it by car if you stay left when you come over the bridge from hereford past the lesure pool turn and take next left after the welsh club
also if any one wants to stay over nite theres a great guest house just up from the lesure pool called norfolk house only 50 yards from the river

PS. you can also buy the day ticket at sues

Great report. Lovely place Hereford, used to go out with a girl from down there, used to fish the Millpond at Tarrington now and then. Never fished the Wye but fancy it after reading that. Do they still sell 'GL' cider in the pubs round there? :-)
