Today saw the fifth and last round of the Fish4Wales Autumn series held on the Old Canallake at White Springs Fishery, Pontardulais near Swansea.
Malc Doyle just needed a section win to guaranteee finishing first.
I was just fishing for pride, having missed the first match and only having second in sections in the next three.
After the draw, I had drawn peg 5, I set up three tops, one with 16-18 elastic to fish to the island at 14 metres, a no 10 elastic to fish at 9 metres and a 12 elastic to fish to one side approx 4 feet from the bank.
At the all in I potted in one small ball of stim groundbait with a few pellets at 9 metres, the same at 14 and in the margin.
I started at 9 metres on a 0.5gm float, with a size 20 to 2lb bottom fishing single maggot. for the first hour I swapped between my three lines without a touch until I finally had a couple of bites at 9 metres which pulled out. I changed hook to a size 18 and immediately hooked my first fish, a small f1 about 2 ounces.
In quick succession I had another couple of fish, so I then put in a large ball of stim groundbait with a full pot of 2mm pellets. I then caught frequently on single red maggot for the next hour. After pulling out of a couple more fish I changed to a size 16 hook and changed bait to sweetcorn.
Putting in a ball of groundbait approx every 45 minutes I caught regualrly until the all out. I was confident of a section win but was delighted with a final net of 14lb 12 oz of F1s giving me a match win on the day. The first time I had ever entered a pool and won.
I finally finished third in the series with 7 points.
Geoff I try to please one person every day. Today wasn't your day and after checking my diary it doesn't look too good for you tomorrow either.
