Zippy,Martin & Scott,

Thank you for your kind words.

Must admit it was nice to actually fish rather than just telling Malc how he should be doing it and the 2 bigger Tench put up a good fight and were lovely to see even if it did mean another spin in the washing machine today to get the slime off me.

Location -Paradise Lake, Lakenheath, Suffolk (Small Day Ticket Water, £5 p/day)
Date/Time - Sunday 7th July - 8am till 1pm.
Weather - Light wind, overcast

Sorry this is not as up to date as some of the entries, but this is the first time I've had a few minutes to sit down and post the entry.

For once I was on my own as my two normal companions (my sons) were either away at cub camp (the 9 year old), or didn't want to get up early on a Sunday morning (the 14 year old). On Saturday evening I reached a diplomatic compromise with my wife that I would only go until lunch-time as her parents were coming over. After reaching this agreement I promptly raided the cupboards as I had not been expecting this and hadn't bought any bait. Found a tin of corn and a tin of luncheonmeat, plus added a few "extras" to some readymade groundbait mix. Hopefully, in conjunction with some hookable carp pellets etc. would see me through - and get some bites. In anticipation of an early start I packed the gear in the car ready for the morning and went to bed with that feeling of anticipation, expectation and optimism I'm sure we are all familiar with.

Up early(ish - about 6am), snuck out without waking anybody else up, after making the flask and taking half of the loaf of fresh bread that had been made overnight (I didn't know it was wanted to feed our visitors did I? - ). Anyway now fully prepared I set off for the 20 mile drive to what was a new venue for me.

It's a small lake, if you can visualise a ring-doughnut you'll get the picture (the hole in the middle being a central island), with between 20 -30 feet of water between the swims and the island. Got there about 10 minutes before the gates were opened at 7.30.

Had a chat to the owner who reccomended that I use Swim 17 and cast back towards a clump of lillypads just off one edge of the island. He also informed me that the day before 10 carp up to about 10lb had come out from that end of the lake the day before.

Put some groundbait in while I got setup, (1 ledger rod, Size 12 hook and 1 waggler rod, Size 16 hook), alternating between the corn and the luncheonmeat to start with. Cast out and sat down to wait, and wait, and wait...just a few knocks against the float that I didn't get.

Eventually at about 10.45 I got a decent bite on the float and got a small Rudd (on corn) - well at least I hadn't blanked.

About 30 minutes later I heard yet another bite-alarm going off and then realised it was mine (I hadn't heard it for so long I'd forgotten what it sounded like), indicator was up against the butt and line was disappearing. Was into a small Carp (on corn/meat cocktail) of about 2lbs that put a decent fight until it was in the net.

Another 10 miniutes and another (even smaller) Rudd on waggler/corn.

That was it until my alarm went at about 12.30 - unfortunately this time it was my watch alarm, not my bite alarm - telling me it was time to start packing up.

Although it wasn't a great haul, it was an enjoyable few hours and it's definitely a venue I'll go back to.

Location:- Welham Lake, Malton, North Yorks
Date/Time Tuesday 9th July 8am - 8pm

Hadn't fished Welham for two years due to foot and mouth, so when a work-mate revealed he'd booked the whole lake (and got the company to subsidise the trip) I was understandably somewhat keen to fish.

For those that don't know the lake, its about 3 or 4 acres in size with a large island at one end. Despite its size there are only ten pegs on the whole lake and the owner doesn't let more than eight anglers fish at any one time. It used to be famous for huge bags of tench (100lbs being not uncommon) but a few carp were added about 15 years ago and these have taken over to some extent.

I decided to set-up on the dam-wall, which is the deepest part of the lake (still only about four foot though)and mixed up a large bucket-full of groundbait (half a bag of PV1, half a bag of Sensas Crazy Bait Gold, with green-lipped mussel and CSL added to the water) in order to fish method-feeder into the middle of the lake. Also rigged up a small waggler to fish a little closer in (two rods are allowed on this fishery)

Fished about 30 yards out with the method-feeder and after clipping-up had two or three casts to get some bait into the water. The fish found my bait (double red maggot on a Kamasan B611 size 18) almost straight away, the quivertip twitching as the fish nudged the feeder. After only 10 minutes the tip pulled round and stayed round and I struck into my first fish of the day, a tench of just over 2lb.

Caught fairly steadily for a couple of hours, but hadn't had a bite on the waggler (despite regular loose-feeding). I'd just started winding my float in when the tip rod almost got pulled in the lake, so I dropped the float rod and struck into what turned out to be a 2lb carp. That was successfully landed and returned, I cast the feeder out again and as I did so realised that the abandoned waggler rod was getting towed lakewards. Dropped the feeder rod onto the rest, picked up the float rod and was rewarded with an eel (ugh )of about a pound. That was also returned and I switched my attention to the feeder rod, tried to tighten up to the feeder and found I had yards and yards of slack line. I kept winding and suddenly everything went solid as I wound into a fish which had obviously taken my bait and swam towards me.

As soon as the fish realised it was hooked it took off towards the island and there then followed a 15 minute battle before I slipped the net under a personal best 14lb 12oz common carp (in absolutely immaculate condition)I hooked another fish of similar size an hour or so later but that managed to find an unseen underwater snag into which it neatly transferred the hook (how do they do that?)

As the afternoon wore on more and more carp were visible feeding on the surface, so I started introducing chum mixers which they took fairly confidently. Fed two swims, one for the ducks and one for the carp before flicking out a light controller float with two mixers glued to the shank of a size 10 hook. These carp were cute though, tried everything I had that floated (mixers, bread and pellets)but anything with a hook in it was examined and then totally ignored. It didn't matter how I mounted the bait either, hair-rigged, glued, drilled or banded the result was the same. (With hindsight I should have got my pole out and just lowered a big chunk of bread onto the surface)

Finished up with around 40lbs of carp and tench (and three eels)but the PB carp made my day!

I've got loads of photos and if I could figure out how to paste them in here I would (I'm sure its really easy but I can't figure out how to do it)

Let me know if you do arrange to meet there, or in that area, and I'll join up with you if I can (and if you've no objections).

I live just outside Bury. St. Edmunds so anywhere near there is convenient for me.

No, I'm away on holiday in mid-August.

Talking of Stowmarket I take the kids to Lakeside at OneHouse sometimes, have you ever fished it?

No Alan, but I've been up to look.
I understand theres a one-eyed catfish in there, around about the 50lb mark?

I need fish with defective vision to take my bait LOL,

Another time then Alan, but there are lots of meets all over the place coming up.

Sat 13th july…island dam

Arrived at 6:00 weather was pretty good, very sunny with only a light breeze. Settled on a swim on the far bank of the lake with the breeze in my face.
Set up two rods as follows.
One to be fished in the margins, small bomb on 6lb main line to a 4lb h/length to a size 14 hook, this was going on a bite alarm.
Next was for fishing at distance, drennen gripmesh feeder on 5lb main to a 3lb h/length with a size 16 hook.
I had planned for this session all week, bait consisted of 1½pints dead red maggots (flavoured with scopex), chunks of meat, riddled meat and groundbait.
First I had a bit of a plumb in the margin just using the small bomb and was quite pleased to find an even 3 ft of water, in went my bomb (just lowered) with a chunk of meat on the hook and a couple of balls of riddled meat.
After about 15 mins of casting with the feeder, I found a small shelf at 30 yrds giving me 10ft of water, I filled the feeder with ded reds, plugged it with g/bait, put two maggots on the hook and out it went.
I only made the one cast as I wanted to see if there was anything out there before putting any feed in, after about 15 mins I hadn’t had a touch so made another cast again with double maggot on the hook, after 10 mins I got a couple of little taps then the tip pulled round slowly, soon I was unhooking a bream of about 2lb, still not even a touch on the margin rig.
Feeder filled and 2 maggots on the hook another cast brought me a few taps but nothing to strike at, this went on for the next 3 casts then I hooked a bream of about 1½lb.
A few more casts and the bites were starting to get a bit bolder, soon I had got 6 bream, all between 1½ and 2½lb I decided that they wanted some feed so I made 6 casts to get some bait in then continued with 2 maggots on the hook.
Bites were a lot better, some were still a bit shy but at least I was connecting with a few, all bream in the 2-3lb range, still nothing on the margin rig, not even a sniff.
I carried on like this till dinnertime, basking in the glorious sunshine, watching some pretty big perch chasing fry and catching the odd fish.
By this time I’m afraid to say that the sun was now starting to burn me, I still hadn’t had a touch on the margin rig and the bites on my feeder rig were drying up so I decided to call it a day.
Finished up with 20 bream between 1½ and 3lb, all in all a very enjoyable morning.

Hi everyone some great reports there lads...

Date - 12th July
Venue - River Tees at Broken scar Darlington
Night fishing 8.30pm till 1am
Weather - Very cool and clear 6c

So l was back for another night session on the hunt for them elusive barbel....got one last week as half the population knows by now...so l was eager for another...
So set my feeder up with 5lb straight through with a running bomb rig with size 8 Super Specialist hook...decided to try mussels yet again < Norm> ...and within 5 mins got a good tug and missed it as l was setting my keepnet and landing net up at the time...
Bout 9pm got a phone call from GB to say he was coming down with his Dad for a session...nice one...
About 9.15 my tip wrapped round and got into my first chub of the evening a nice fish about a 1lb....
< Incidentally we have had lots of thunderstorms the past 2 days prior to fishing so was surprised to find the river well below normal>

At 9.30 GB arrived and eagerly set up next to me, l was gettings lots of bites on mussels but couldnt hit them....decided as it was getting late to put the ole meat on...and was getting little touches on the tip but nothing to hit...l guess they were dace nibbling the meat...

GBS dad was in the next swim and was getting fish by 10.15 on cheese at thge end of the session he had 3 chub to 3lbs and 3 eels on cheese...

I had two more chub later on on meat but as his dad was getting cold and even l was shivering we decided to leave early at 1am

Outcome
Myself had 3 chub biggest around 3lbs
Gbs dad had 3 chub to 3lb plus 3 wriggleys to a pound
GB had nowt....nothing went right in the session for him

I enjoyed myself as l always do and so far this season l havent blanked....long may it continue

As a council worker l am on strike on Wednesday < didnt want to but had to go with the majority...> so l am off to Croft on Tees at around 3am for a early session till midday armed with bread and mussels....money permitting that is...a post will be forth coming if l do....

Cheers an tight lines all....

Mook.....B.L.C.F.L Campaign....Ban license cheats for life and keep the banks clean ......are you doing your bit ?????

Bit late but a report from the Coca Cola lads at Fleets Dam near Barnsley on Friday.

After picking everybody up and travelling up the M1 for some 140miles.We arrived to be met by our counterparts from the Wakefield factory.A great bunch of lads always good for a laugh and wind up.

Personally i intend to fish 3 lines on the pole at 12m at 5m and in the margin.I also set up a method feeder for use in the first half hour whilst my pole lines settled.

Feeding pellet and catmeat on 12m the swim was fizzing straight away.I fed pellet on its own at 5m and in the margin fed meat and corn for late on in the day.

First chuck on the method and nothing out again and still nothing.Feed the 12m line again and see what happens.Fizzing like mad.Time for a look.First put in with catmeat on the hook and bang a lovely common around 61/2lb then nothing.Still feeding the peg was still bubbling away like a jaccuzi but no bites were coming.A switch to 5m on paste resulted in a few knocks but no proper bites.
I switched back to the 12m line and still nothing(what was happening to me,the peg was fizzing away every time i fed loosefeed but the would not take the hookbait).Try the margins and still nothing,This is getting silly.

This followed all day until with 1/2 hour to go i grabbed the method rod and slung it out to 40yrds and sat on it.After 10mins the tip flew round and another small common around 3 pound came to the net.

2 bites all day and 2 fish in the net(100% in my book)

Final weight were:

1st Phil Howcroft 23lb
2nd Mark Hopkinson 15lb
3rd Andy Stevens 10lb
4th Keith Ashby 91/2lb
5th Kevin Arathoon(Kev coke) 81/2lb
A good day was had by all and we look forward to fishing against them in September on our own water in Milton Keynes.

Keith

Sun 14th Arren's Lake,Essex.

A lovely warm summers day promised a decent days sport on this rural venue noted for it's winter time bags of rudd & roach, however at this time of year the carp enter the equation, and if they aren't in your swim you ain't going to win.
I drew peg 19 and they weren't there!!!!!!!
However fishing a power top 2 with a no12 elastic (just in case Mr Carp decided to put in an appearance) a busy time was had with the small rudd that refused to be fed off.
Averaging about 1oz apiece they kept coming at intervals all day,and come the final whistle, rolled the scales around to record a weight of 32lbs 12ozs.Only good enough for 10th on the day but a pleasant days fishing all the same.

Peter.

Date : 14/07/02
Venue: Meadowlands nr Coventry
Time : 9am till 3pm

Today was Lime Tree's 3rd match in the Summer Aggregate and we fished the 40 peg Warren Pool which is the smaller of the 2 pools at Meadowlands.

This pool contains all the normal commercial fishery stock with Carp and Skimmers being the major match winners.

At the draw i pulled peg 9 which was at the far end of a bay in a corner with a tree and a fence running through the tree out into the water for a feature to it's right.

Picture of my swim

As the water level was down i set up my platform infront of the wooden platform and sat upto my knees in the water (and it was great).

The fence i mentioned earlier went through the tree and out into the lake by another 15ft or so, and me being me chose to make my main swim about 5ft the other side of the fence into 3ft of water and about 4ft away from the tree.
Which ment that any fish hooked would need to be pulled about 10ft out from the tree and around the fence (well it was going to be fun if nothing else.

As is normaly the case (i'm slow) when the whistle blew to start i had only just plumbed up with 1 rig and still had to more to do and then sort out my bait.

Eventually at twenty past 9 i was ready to feed and 2 large pot's of meat went on my main line (over the fence) and 1 pot went in on my side of the fence in the tree.

First put in on the main line and the float burried and a skimmer of about 1lb was bullied past the fence and then netted (i was well happy with that), 2nd put in and a brown goldfish about the same size came to the net.

Every fish i hooked had to be pulled away from the tree and past the fence and i was amazed that i never lost 1 fish because of either the only fish i did lose were because the hook pulled out and then i only lost 5.

I found that if i refed a pot of meat every 15mins i could get bites better although i missed most of them.
Ended up using about 5½ tins of riddled meat.

In the end i netted Brown Goldfish,Skimmers,Carp and 1 small Roach and 1 Gudgeon for a weight of 54lb and second with the winner getting 55lb 13oz so was very pleased with the result.

For those that are wondering about our mate Dirk yes he was fishing and just to keep him happy here he is being weighed in with 20lb 3oz

Great Reports lads,
The increase in posters makes it really enjoyable reading!
Terrific Chub Darryl, cant wait to discuss it tuesday!
MALC, You have a probable Plumrose award coming!
5 and 1/2 tins of meat!
You'll have to win that £1 of Dirks every day for a week to cover that LOL

Me,
Today I was feeling really rough, so prepared and fixed and tidied and cleaned and sorted. AND then succumbed to the need to fish, so hit the Dove at 7.30pm.
Had to wait until 11.10pm for my only bite and then discovered my damn US Scales had packed up and I hadnt got my old ones!
So this handsome fellow went unweighed!

I judged him 3 to 4lbs, see his size by my 10 boot!
Thank goodness I didn't discover the scales had packed up after catching my barbel!

Back tomorrow,
cya

As a council worker l am on strike on Wednesday < didnt want to but had to go with the majority...>

Sorry Mook

That is one statement I cannot agree with.

Every vote to strike is also a vote to work as well. Every body who voted against a strike should go to work, and stuff those who want an extra days holiday. So you get sent to Coventry, (Good fishing there), at least those who thought your way would talk to you.

If you want to go to work and earn money, then do so. 6% is a mockery, even guys in firms who MAKE money did not ask for that amount. Don't the council workers realise who are paying their wages?

Do the union leaders back you up and lose a days pay as well? I think not.

If you get the pay rise you are asking for you will next complain that the Council rents and rates are too high.

I have never agreed with strikes mainly because the people who usually call them are the ones with least to lose.

OK rant over

Hi Everyone.

This is my first post on this forum. I’ve been browsing through the post for a couple of days and it’s a great place to be, it combines my 2 favourite hobbies in one and you can’t beat that. My name is Andy and my fishing partner is my wife Denise (Den) hence the screen name.

Anyway down to business.

Date: Saturday 13th July 2002
Venue: Woodlands Complex Carlton Minniot – Kingfisher Lake.

Arrived at 7.00 am prompt and joined the queue to get in. The gates opened and the cars tore off to the lakes with bodies piling out and dashing madly to get the best pegs. We took a more leisurely approach but we were still fishing by 7.30.

First cast with triple red maggot on size 16 produced a skimmer no bigger than my little finger which must have dislocated its jaw to get the maggots in. Second cast and the same again. Changed bait to half a dendro and bulked some shot just above the hooklength and the float settled nicely. Loose fed some hemp and 5 mins later a nice 3lb+ common came to the net. This was followed by another couple of carp and a tench all around the 1lb mark.

At 10.30 I went to get the bacon butties and another tub of worms, and sat down next to Den for a while and we had breakfast. Den wasn’t doing so well, she was hoping to better her performance of the previous week when she had a dozen fish, the best being a 5 ½ lb common on the Silver Birch lake.

This week wasn’t going so well, loads of bites but missing them all the time. She had tried adjusting her depth and changing hook size and bait combinations but no joy. I noticed the rod she was using (a 13ft ABU waggler rod) had a lot of bend in it everytime she struck and it took an age to pick up the line and she was missing the bite. A quick trip over to the tackle shop with the credit card and we returned with a Steadfast 2XL carp match rod. She quickly set up again and with the first cast she had a skimmer close to the 1lb mark. She only had 1 more fish in the rest of the day, a common of about 3lb but she enjoyed the day using her new rod and actually lost a couple of bigun’s because she was frightened she might break it.

As for me, I returned to my peg and things had slowed up. By noon I had 13 fish mostly skimmer and roach by now. After lunch everything switched off for us and I didn’t get another fish until 6.00 in the evening and that was just a solitary skimmer.

Not a great days fishing but it was nice to get out and soak up a bit of sun for a change and we were treated to a fly past of hot air balloons in the evening.

Thank you for reading my post and I look forward to participating on the forum in the future.

Andy

Nice report and nice photos.
