Looks like you have got to be at renny's by first light, its getting like woodlands, well done feeder fan. I fished Aldin Grange on Saturday and caught a roach and a small tench in 8 hours, Anthony caught two roach. I have on the highest authority (Norm)that Aldin Grange had been fishing well previously. Perhaps the fish were on their holidays.

Toma, Daz & Bernie, Nice to see you all getting amongst the fish.
Feeder Fan, Sounds like another good day for you, but take care and try not to get too sunburnt.
And now for my day.........
Well, the 1st match of the season for Hawthorne AC saw me driving down the M2 on the way to Lavender Farm on a bright warm sunny morning. In the car-park all the usual suspects and a few new members were assembled for the draw, and with 25 members taking part peg18 stuck to my hand. Now the match lake has what you might term a profusion of reeds, not just in the margins, but also on a number of sunken islands giving nearly every peg a feature to fish to.
Peg 18.......

The problem today however was that the recent spell of warm weather had encouraged the carp to play Mums & Dads. They were soon thrashing the water to foam all over the fishery and those that weren't were cruising aimlessly in the upper layers sunning themselves.
With the match half way through I hadn't had so much as a bite despite ringing the changes with Pellet, Corn & Maggot in both the margins and the island at 11mtrs in front of me. Then at 1pm a small group of carp started to cruise the reeds by the island so on went a foot of line with a 16 hook and 3 maggots and out came the catapult to spray a steady stream of maggots in their direction.
Reeds Everywhere.......

Now the fact that the islands are sunk means that if you're not quick, any carp that are hooked can swim straight through the reeds and out the other side, and 4 managed to do just that however 11 didn't manage it and when the scales arrived they totalled 23lbs exactly. This gave me 7th place overall, which given the outlook half way through the match was i felt a fairly decent result.
Peter.

Nice result and nice pictures Peter. Cracking photos.
I was fishing Island Lodge in Tottington, Greater Manchester today. It was only my second wisit to the venue, my first time being in a match a few week ago. With another match there just around the corner, I figured a little venue familiarisation wouldn't go amiss.
Although the weather was poor for slab fishing, being flat calm and red hot, I decided to have a go anyway. They are notoriously difficult to get out of the venue, but figured I couldn't go far wrong catching skimmers while waiting for the slabs to come in.
A half hour into the session, the first skimmers started coming, with the odd 1-2lb Bream and nice roach also coming to the net. I bumped a few fish, got smashed by one and just plain missed a few, but it was all good fun and managed to get plenty in the net. I kept ringing the changes and varying presentation just to get a feel for how the fish react in this venue, and it paid off pretty well resulting in a 16lb mixed bag. You've just got to love exploring new venues.
Anyway. Got some familiarisation for the next match and a few techniques up my sleeve, so we'll see how it goes.
Early afternoon, a photographer arrived. He asked if I'd mind having my photo taken for the Anglers Mail, to which I replied no probs. The image in the mail may be similar to the one below, although he took photos of me from loads of different places, so I dunno. I was just trying to enjoy a fag and a brew whilst wating for the next wave of bites, the price of fame eh? lol. I took my camera today, and the missus, who was kicking back with me reading a book on the bank, took my photo with our camera.
Anyway. A good day.

WILLOWCROFT LAKES,WISBECH ST.MARY,CAMBRIDGESHIRE
Friday 14th May-Set off for a weekend's search for catfish.Martin Scott had kindly gone along to the fishery to reserve two pegs for myself and Nick(Polepot).Good job he did as the fishery was packed and we only just managed to get the last two pegs on the proviso that we moved the following day as a large party had reserved pegs along the bank we were to fish. Arrived at 6.40 and set up the bivvy.Nick was running late after fishing a match at Rolph's so settled in to await his arrival. Missed one run before Nick arrived. Nick arrived and decided to tackle up before putting his bivvy up.Martin and his wife Babs arrived for a quick visit and it was while they were there that Nick caught his first cat.A 'babbie' as Martin would say of about 5/6lb. The sun set and it was then that Nick found out how difficult it was to put up a bivvy in the dark! I kept on missing runs but eventually hooked into my first and what proved to be the biggest cat of the session at 10.75lb.Not huge as they go but a nice double figure fish. The fish was only just hooked in the lip as most of the fish we caught proved to be.They were feeding but very warily which might explain the many missed runs. Anyway we had a great time and packed up at 11 on Sunday after a session which included a splendid BBQ cooked by John the bailiff on Saturday evening. Final tally-- 3 cats to Nick and 5 to me including the 10.75 pounder which is now my P.B. Nick was the cameraman over the session and will post the pictures when he can. Cheers, Richard.

Monday 17th May, saw Sue and I back again at the "secret venue", it was not our first choice today. We had originally planned to fish a pond near Long Marston, but on arriving we found a notice on the gate, "closed for ALL FISHING untill 1st June"........Is this a "New Close Season" ??? Strange !!
So I gave Sue the "options", do we go to Carpvale, Poppleton, or Brafferton, all nearby "commercials" or do we go to the "secret Venue"............"NO CONTEST" she said.
We all have to abide by the "wifes decisions"
A good choice nevertheless !!
Arriving later than normal, and we had the entire lake to ourselves........so after a good walk around, watching the Carp "play mums and dads" ( as Peter puts it). They were actually spawning among the submerged branches of the bushes around the lake, due to the lack of "weed beds and lillies" owing to the "Grassies" eating them.
After choosing pegs, I put a little "pre-bait" in mine before I assembled my pole, choosing a No 10 elastic, as being "middle of the road" just in case something "bigger than average" came in. First put in and I was glad of the 10 laccy ! Tench. Second put in Tench (4.75lbs) Third put in Grassie, only a "small one" about 7.5lbs and at this stage Sue hadn't got a "bait in the water" !! Fourth put in Tench (again) about 4.5lbs "Sue is now getting SICK"
I thought I'm sat on a "shedful" here, so I let Sue sit on my box and use my pole, after missing a couple of bites.......she connects into one............Bream???? where did that come from? and the next bite Bream??? from among all those Tench. The idea was to get Sue to play a Tench "on the pole".
Whilst Sue is on my peg I fished her peg and caught a few skimmers, I said "Sue you have a shoal of skimmers here feeding". So returning to her own peg she proceeds to catch......Perch, where did they come from??? She did connect with the skimmers and finished up with a "nice bag".
Sue's "bag" of mainly skimmers.

Sue putting another one in the keepnet.

My Tench (for 3 points for the "fish race")

My Grassie (for 3 points) it looked like it had been badly handled, but not by me.

My little Chub (for 3 points) in amongst the rest of my catch.

All things considered, it wasn't supposed to be the venue for today, but I'm glad we went...........I've now "caught up with Sue" in the fish race,........PHEW, I can't let her beat me.
catch you later, tight lines, dave....

Last Cast Lake, Bury St. Edmunds - Friday 14th May
Laurie and I joined a new water in Bury on Friday morning and decided to try it out when I got home from work on Friday evening. I should add at this point that our fishing at the moment is being seriously interrupted by the fact that we moved house in mid-March, and this is the first time we have been out since then. In fact, a lot of our gear is still in a friend's garage waiting for me to get a shed put up.
We got there about 7pm and had a walk round to get a feel for what was going on. I had fished there once before last Autumn, but hadn't had the opportunity to walk around and have a good look in daylight before now.
It's a delightful, small "estate lake" type water with a mix of silvers, tench, pike and carp up to low twenties, as well as a couple of sturgeon. One bank is out-of-bounds as it is the end of the owner's garden but the other three banks are fishable.
We set ourselves up in a large double-swim call The Bench and cast Laurie's leger rod out about 40 yards with a piece of salami on the hook and a few more pieces attached via PVA string to add to the attraction.
A second leger rod, for me, was set up and dropped in under the overhanging branches of a tree about 3 foot from the bank on a very slack line. The hookbait was 2 pieces of artificial corn (one pink, one yellow) and a liberal helping of hemp and sweetcorn was thrown in as well.
About 15 minutes later the margin rod was off, with a screaming run. I wound down and was in to what felt like a very nice fish. It came to the surface and we saw that it was a common. As it approached the net that Laurie had ready, it took one look at it and departed for the other side of the lake like a rocket.
Five minutes later I had managed to get it back near the net, and it went again taking another 40 yards of line without breaking sweat.
All the while this was going on I kept thinking "where are the snags in here, there must be some" but luckily it didn't find any and at the third time of asking it slipped into the net and we lifted it out of the water and onto the unhooking mat.

A delightful fish, at a new PB of 10.75lb , and one that fought much harder than the 18.5lb mirror Laurie had last Summer.
That was our only bite of the evening and we were packed up and home by about 10pm. Next time, if I get the gear together, we'll take float rods as well and target the prolific silvers as well.

Thanks Andy, Camera wise it's nothing flash, just a 2·2Megapixel Kodak DX3500 with the Easyshare dock. It was discontinued about 18 months ago, but it's a nice robust camera and a simple bit of kit to use, just point and shoot.

They would look even better if it wasnt for that £*%^ box with the gold lettering on appearing so often.
I must admit though the lake looks good, but then you cant hear the cars tearing along the Dual Carriageway 50yds from the pegs on a photograph.

Found a cracking little venue last week and went back it yesterday afternoon, Just outside Cullumpton in Devon, 4 small ponds stuffed with fish..natural bred carp etc.here's one of the ponds
manged a few come the end from tight inside on the pellet...the thing was there was no noise, just birds singing and fish splashing..heaven!
