Hello
newt thanks for the advice and trev thanks for the offer of a lure.
newt they sound a lot like jellyworms that i use for sea fishing for pollack and bass , same thing a rubber worm with a big hook through the centre ,if so ill try em for trout next time , when the water comes down a bit more.
are they made from the same stuff as the skirts on spinner baits? (the rubber crawtail ones i mean)
ive not tried them for trout but i have a few jellyworms and ill give em a go.
good luck ADAM

Adam - I quite frankly don't know what these particular ones are made of. I do know they have an action that seems to drive preds nuts at times and they savage them.
But soft plastics are fun and can be an excellent lure at any time.
Depending on how agressive the fish are and what depth they are holding, I use every thing from weightless to a small shot crimped in front to 1oz bullet weights or even up to 2oz round weights for a carolina rig.
Nothing like the depths you need with sea fishing but mine is all fresh water.
Try what you have and if you get inspired, I really love the GYB products but they are a little pricy compared to most soft plastics (can run to $1 per worm).
Otherwise I have had some nice results on the soft baits available in the UK from Fishtek. They last lots longer and are made from some material that will really stretch and stretch. Designed originally for sea fishing so can deal with teeth as well.
For some rigging and tactics, take a look at http://www.bassresource.com/html/tipsindex.html . US page and aimed primarily at black bass (largemouth and smallmouth) but the ideas will apply nicely to any pred fish you happen to have around.

Hello newt
i checked out that website thanks , they look just like the jellyworms i mentioned.
They should work , as the trout i caught had defenitley turned predatory, as his dentition testified , and he defenitely had a ferox look about him, as most of the 3lbs plus fish do, it takes a lot of midges to fill a 3lbs trout.
The river i fish is between 6 and 12 feet deep , so a bullet lead should be just the job, ill have to stock up on worms now.
Thanks again newt ADAM

Date : 19/06/02 Venue: Drayton Reservoir Time : 10am till 4pm
This report is a bit late due to my trip to Wales straight afterwards.
Monday Scott came down to fish with me at Drayton Reservoir again and after meeting in the cafe as before we made our way to Drayton and we were joining in a charity match on the boards side peg numbers 18 to 35H.
As luck would have it Scott was on peg 25 and i was on 24 so we could at least have a chatter in between fish (hopefully).
We both set up Bagging Waggs and Feeder rigs and had a good old natter during the course of the day as the fish were not up to eating much where we were as they were all being caught up in pegs 35A to H and sitting down in shallows from peg 5 to 1 spawning.
But we did manage a bit of action with both of us hooking 2 and landing 1 each.
Scott playing his first hooked Drayton fish (but that 1 got away)

But latter on he hooked and landed this 1 and he was well pleased as the smile shows

A few funny events to others on the day with 1 angler whilst setting up walking off the boards into the lake but i missed that as i was to far away. But later in the day 1 guy 4 pegs away turned to talk to someone and his rod was yanked in followed by a swan dive by him to grab his rod and then playing it stood in the water.

It was a slow but enjoyable day and were back again on Saturday for the first of my charity matches.

Basingstoke canal last night. ANOTHER PB My biggest bream ever, all of 3lb. I now own some scales so Iknow what they weigh. In superb condition, the spawning marks still just about visible on his/her? head. Also some excellent news, my girlfriend has lent me the money to buy equipment to go night fishing and get rid of me on Friday nights so she can get a decent night's sleep. (I keep her awake being excited about going fishing on Saturday, when she has to work!!!)I get the rest of my rods and reels after work so I think I'll do her a favour and stay out the way for the weekend.

Hi all Got my first session of the season in last night(friday 22nd june) on the river Dane, got to the river about 1800 thro about half a tin of corn in and about 1/4 lb hemp in. Set up my porky pig with 8lb line straight thro to my 12 animal hook and a 1oz running lead connected via a silicone feeder link, about 3ft away from the hook. Casted out to an overhanging tree within half an hour i caught this 12lb'er
 NICE HAT
After recasting i then went onto catch a 2lb chub and a 3 1/2 lb chub. Just after it got dark i then caught this 10lb'er
THeres that hat again lol After spending over 10 mins nursing the second fish back to full strenth with water flowing over my knees ,i went home a verry happy man looking forward to my next session on the river. both of these fish where caught in lees than 3ft of water

Yes l have and l am Pete...jealous of Pauls fish well done Paul...had a few on but lost a few, never got one on the bank.....
Date - 21st June Venue - River Tees Broken Scar in Darlington Night fishing 8pm - 3.30am Weather - Yes lots of it all around but with me calm still and 12c had the odd shower later on...
It was nice to get back from the close season break to my fave free stretch of the River Tees...which is about 200yrds from where the record chub was caught... Earlier on l had arranged with fellow md member GB to meet him at the venue at around 8pm... But as l was impatient l decided to go early and arrived at 7pm, but my swim was surrounded by 2 young lads on my right and there father on my left doing great guns with the resident dace shoals As l knew things woiuld be hard going for me at first due to all the maggot feeders hitting water around me, l decided to set up slowly and hope the chub come on the feed.... I set up my feeder rod with a bomb set up with 4lb mainline with a 3lb hair rig hooklength..with a size 6 Drennan starpoint hook...this was my first go with the hair rig ....l had got squid flavoured meat with me and some cheese... It took me a while to get set up with all the usual octoplus gear but was fishing at 8pm....but my mobile went and it was GB he couldnt find any transport but would try to make it....but as time went by l knew he couldnt make it.. So after a few knocks and drop back bites, the first hour flew by and the family had decided to call it a day and they left...leaving me all on my lonesome with only the for company skimming the surface of the river, and occasionally hitting my line....nice to see though At 9.30pm my rod bounced off the rest but l was too slow an missed it so after alot of l baited up again... This first hour of bites was doing my head in, so l had to ...and l changed tact by removing the hair rig...and on to normal hooked meat.... At 10.30pm a good bite resulted in a nice fight with my chosen quarry a chub of about 2anna arf pounds....in the next few hours l had lots more bites but only managed to hit 4 altogether and bank 4 chub...had about 7lb in my net.... By about 11pm the usual idiots in there were in the car park 300yrds to my right...doing good immpersonations of the Dukes of hazzard...across the car park....but they soon got bored and moved on thank god.... It 11.15pm when l noticed it was the the longest day, and it must have been the shortest night cause by 3,30am it was light....
I have taken a few photos of Broken scar and the 4 chub so when this films full l will send them to out gracious leader to post on the forums...if they come out ok......
Anyway cheers everyone and tight lines to all....

Off to the Mushroom Farm at Falkenville, just outside Hailsham in Sussex for the 4th club match of the season.
The Racetrack. (looking from the bottom towards the top end)

The match was to take place on the fishery match lake called the racetrack,The target species on this lake is carp, but there is a prolific head of roach and skimmers if the carp don't show,an interesting addition however are a number of Wels Catfish up to about 15lbs.
After a superb cooked breakfast in the barn it was time for the draw. The favoured swims with the wind as it was, were at the top end of the lake.So as you can guess out comes 23,at the opposite end.
On previous matches at this venue i've dabbled with various pastes, with varying degrees of success.Today i had decided that come what may i would stick with a pellet and paste attack. With the wind gusting making presentation awkward at 13mtrs I just set up the one rig to fish pellet over paste at 7mtrs.This consisted of a Drennan carp2 float on a length of Trilene XT and a Drennan Carbon Carp (size 10).No weight on the rig, just the weight of the paste to cock the float.
Sport was never fast and furious, but the bites when they came were either a definite lift or sailaways.I finished the match by putting 41lbs 14ozs (all carp) on the scales, which was top weight on my bank, but only good enough for 3rd overall.
This is the best result i've had fishing paste, and i shall be trying it a lot more in the coming season and putting some of Malc's recipes to the test.

Good reports one and all, hopefully Trogg has looked at the pic's of the Barbel and now know's what they look like on the bank you'll bank 1 one day Trogg.
Date : 23/06/02 Venue: Grand Union Canal Welton (am) Kilworth Sticks Main Lake (pm) Time : 10am till 2.15pm then 4.30pm till 9.30pm
This report is a bit late as sleep got in the way (make's a change). First trip was to the canal at Welton nr Daventry with Steve W and a young lad called Lee after the Bream. Started fishing at 10am fished at the bottom of the far shelf with sweetcorn over a bed of groundbait and pellets the fishing was slow but Steve managed to get 2 out around the 2lb mark and a hand full of Skimmers mainly on the corn.
Including this 1 with a big indent in it's back (if you can see it)

Myself i managed 1 Skimmer about 1½lb and bumped another. Lee ended up with a few small Perch.
We called it a day at 2.15 as the boats were doing their best to wreck the fishing by going full speed along the far bank instead of down the middle. And we were also fed up with being pepperd all the time by some of a farmer who was wood pidgeon in the field behind us.
In the evenning i took Lee to Kilworth Sticks and we fished their Main lake it was the first time either of us had fished this pool and Lee wanted to use this trip for me to show him how i use and fish with riddled meat on a new (to me) water.
After sorting out which pegs we were going to fish we settled down to the fishing. The swin Lee chose was in a corner with a tree on either side growing in the water and just screamed fish. I chose a swim a few pegs away into open water so i could see and hear was he was doing.
From the first put in all that showed any interest in the meat were Gudgeon and small Rudd but at 7.30 it was like a switch was turned on and carp were suddenly topping every where then i caught the first carp.
The first carp a Mirror around 3lb

Lee then came round to see what i was doing different as all he could get were the bit's. whilst he was sat with me this lovely Ghostie also around 3lb came out

We both then went back to his swim to see if i could help him catch a carp or 2. After 10 mins of suggestions and tips Lee hooked his first carp which unfortuneatly he pulled out of. Then a string of Rudd followed with a few baby carp under lb and finaly at about 20 past 9 he hooked a better carp thats pictured below of about 3lb.
Then we packed up and Lee went home happy.
I ended with 5 carp all around 3lb but one thing that stood out about the fish was the fact that every one was in perfect condition with not a blemish on them which made a difference from Saturday at Drayton.

Basingstoke Canal again last night. Rapidly becoming a favourite, and it's 2 minutes from work so I can be there by 4.15pm. Nice
Loads of nicer sized roach and perch. Very spiritted little fighters and much more fun on my new match rod than the fast action one I was using before. Lost a very nice tench. Gutted, but got a decent sized bream to make up for it. But, bizarrely, my fish of the night was only about 2 inches long and brownish in colour - a little ruffe, I've never caught one before and forgot they even existed. For those who haven't seen one, they look like a little perch, but without the colouring and the dorsal fin's a bit different. Very pretty, in an ugly sort of way (if you get my drift). I'm off there again tonight to wreak havoc on that tench that eluded me.

Hia Malc
Looks like you and lee had a good evening on Sunday as those carp look lovely, especially the ghosty. But ONLY 3lbs!! :) I’ve been a Drayton too often.
speaking of which, did'nt my pics come out :(
As daft as it sounds (being to Drayton 3 times, covering 164 miles round trip each time and catching 1 fish) i thoroughly enjoyed it. Must be the company (cant be the peggy fishing) and it was good to see some old MD faces.
I'll keep you fellas posted regarding Cudmore

Date : 25/06/02 Venue: Boat Pool @ Peatling Parva Time : 10am till 3pm
Today once again i was out with the Rugby Disabled lads on their weekly Tuesday match, at a fishery that untill today i had never even seen let alone fished before. When you think its only 8 miles from my front door i can not believe i have never been to look at it before. But after the fishing today i will definatly be back there again in the future.
From information i gathered before todays visit i new it was a bread and feeder venue but me being me i went with meat for feed and hook bait and a little corn as a change bait.
I fished 2 lines the first and main line was at 7mtrs into 5½ ft of water and this was fished with 14 lacy with .75grm float to 0.14 line and a size 16 animal hook for fishing the pelleted and riddled meat.
The second swim was 4 mtrs to my left and 2ft from the bank into 2ft of water and this rig was 0.16 line to a size 12 mustard hook with an 18 lacy for the catmeat.
I started off on the far line with pelleted meat on the hook and took 7 fish between 6 & 12oz in the first 7 put ins. Then after ½hr this swim died off, so then i tryed over the near swim with catmeat and the fish below was the first fish from that swim
I ended up chipping and changing between both swims taking a few fish from each for the rest of the match. Ended up with 42 fish made up of Tench, Roach, Crucians, Mirrors, Commons and the Shubunkin with only 1 of the fish being over a lb which was a common about 2½lb for a total weight of 21lb 3oz and 4th in the match.
Yes Dirk was also fishing and yes once again hes a pound richer but whilst he was loading his gear away i rescued RED and here he is just before my dramatic rescue operation

RED is now safe and sound after his kidnapp ordeal.
Just got to include the picture below as this is the name of 1 of the other lakes at Peatling

Even though it has my name on it unfortuantly i don't own it.

I have forgiven the tench I lost on the Basingstoke canal on Monday, because I more than made up for it last night with another PB. A bream of 7 1/4 pounds (Previous PB 3lb). It was a whopper. It was so big I landed it in my 22' pan net and it only just fitted in. It's eyes were so big, you could have used them for dinner plates. An absolute beauty in perfect condition. Came in like a wet carrier bag, mind. Virtually swam straight at me. Saw some nice carp and tench come out of the same place, just not on my rods (damn fish!).

Date : 29/06/02 Venue: Parkers Pool Time : 4pm till 9.30pm
This evening i took Lee to Parker's so he could try Pellet & Paste fishing (also as a sneak recy as i've a match their on Thursday).
Parkers is a day ticket pool nr Rugby with about 45 pegs and has minimal bans with a central island.
It contains all the normal species but has a good head of Skimmers and bigger Bream and it can be a good venue but it can also fish hard and it was the latter mood we found it in today.
As is normally the way when you try to show somebody how to do something new they end up doing a better job then you and today was no different .
After showing Lee how to mix packeted paste to different textures he proceeded to hook into a nice Carp around the 5lb mark along with a few 12oz Skimmers and a Tench.
Lee get's his Carp

Myself i ended with a bream around the 3lb mark and a couple of Tench about 1lb each so the teacher got well battered but it was nice to see Lee getting used to fishing the paste and if he carries on as he was today then he can start showing me how to do it.
Well done Lee.
As for RED he is on punishment after logging on the computer and was stuffed in the carryall so no picy of him fishing today but if he's a good TED then i may let him have a go tomorrow and i'll post about it.

Sat 29th june……..island dam……..nr wigan
Arrived at 07:00, new water for me, only been for a walk around the place, and that was 10 yrs ago. Weather was ok, calm with the sun trying to break through. On the first peg was a guy fishing so I went for a chat, as luck would have it, he was the bailiff and after about ½ hour I decided to fish the far bank into the wind. After a nice stroll and an argument with two geese, I picked a peg with a gap between some surface weed. Due to the wind it was going to be a feeder only attack, I positioned my box and set up as follows. 15g maggot feeder on 4lb main line to a 2½ hooklength finished off with a size 16 hook. The lake shelved from 2ft at the edge to 12 ft at 40mtrs then levelled off before dropping off again to 20ft. ½ doz casts made to 40 mtrs to get some maggots into my swim then baited up with double red maggot and waited. First fish came after about 15 mins, a small bream about 1½lb soon followed by another about the same size. After about 2 hours I had managed to get eight fish between 1lb + 2½lb by this time the wind had picked up and was now nearer to a gale than a breeze then it happened. A gust of wind caught my brolly, snap, the pole went (power pole) I set it up again and hoped for the best as this was my only remaining brolly pole. I carried on fishing catching steadily on double red maggot, all small bream up to 2½lb in weight. Tried casters on the hook but that only got me a roach of ¾lb, tried pellet but nothing so continued with red maggot for the rest of the session. After 5 hours fishing it was time to pack up. Finished up with 21 bream between ¾lb + 2½lb, I roach of ¾lb and a ½lb perch. Most enjoyable session, looking forward to fishing there again as the water apparently holds lots of tench and plenty of big bream, the bailiff was very helpful, the banks were clean and it only costs £3 a day and you can use two rods.

Be careful Malc.Red may prefer his tednapper to you if you treat him like that.
River Ouse Olney.
We arrived at the mill stretch for a night session on Friday.Hoping to catch my first river barbel or some chub that live on the far bank.
Took plenty of meat, corn and paste with this in mind.Couple of pints of casters and hemp filled the bait bag.
I set up 2 rods one with a blockend feeder for the casters and hemp the other with a feeder in case i struggled.
Fishing both rods started to get touches on the corn but could not connect to anything.A switch to meat and the same thing.
Casters attracted too many small fish(dace, roach and perch) so switched to another open ended feeder and decided to use as a spare rod in case it got the other rig wrecked.Always happens to me night fishing.
First proper bite came around 2030 and proved to be a tench around 3lb.The swim was full of cabbages and streamer weed so i had to keep the rod high all the time to prevent it from snagging me.Next cast a bream around 6lb.Where were the barbel or chub.
Steadily throughout the night feeding regularly brought the fish on and i caught 22 tench and bream on mainly corn or meat.Total bag was 109lb. My mate took some photos but will have to wait for them to be developed first before posting them.
Will be back on the stretch again soon chasing a barbel as 2 came out further downstream weighing in at 11lb 4oz and 7lb 12oz.

Hello lads an lasses heres my latest report....
Date - 30th June Venue - Free stretch of the River Tees at Croft 3.30am till 10am Weather - Cloudy calm 12c odd drizzly bit....
Right then got to the river this morning to find it 3ft below where me an Norm were fishing 2 weeks ago..Hey Norm l was actually sitting on the spot where you were catching last time !!!!! While in the process of setting up l saw a large swirl to my right and thought to myself < pike >....But to my disbelief and sheer delight a OTTER surfaced looked at me and went down river all l could do was this was my first contact with this wonderful animal..... This put me in a good mood for the few hours l was planning to fish, so l baited up my feeder rod with Norms not so secret bait < cooked mussels >....Didnt take long for the rod to bounce off the rest and with alot of l missed it but at least l knew the fish were there and l still had a smile on my face... ... Next chuck in resulted in another clonking bite and this time no problem for the mookster, and within a few mins a nice chub of 2 an a alf pounds was in the bag.. l thought ( good ol Norms bait ) strikes again !!!! cheers mate ... As the morning progressed the bites were coming thick an fast on mussel and bread flake combinations...had a bit of a problem with a group of young ducks which decided to attack my flake everytime it hit the water...alot of and saying to myself resulted in the ducks going up stream.... Luckily for me they didnt get the flake only the bits from the cage feeder... As 9am came along l had a to myself whether to move as the bites had dried up...so decided to move down river to the slightly faster water...but only 2 rattles in a hour decided to pack in content and knowing at long last one of my ambitions was finalised seeing a otter.... ... My next as Pete keeps reminding me....a whisker is required on the bank...< barbel >....that might take as long as seeing a otter....
So in the end l had 6 chub biggest was my first fish 2 and a alf pounds the others were smaller but good sport...one single dace on bread flake whick took a size 6 hook... ...how it did that heaven knows.....
Looking forward to another night session if the rain does not spoil it yet again....whats happened to our summer !! thats what l think of our weather !!!!
Hey before l sigh off how many of you maggotdrowners have actually seen a otter while fishing ??....nows thats a question for ye..
everyone and tight lines wherever and whatever your after....

Sunday 30th June.
Sylen lake, 5 Roads, Llanelli. £5 ticket, one rod only permitted.
A 15 minute drive from my flat to this picturesque 3 acre lake tucked away in a valley about 8 miles North of Llanelli. I arrived at 8 in the morning, planning to fish until about 2 ish.
This lake has only been opened for just over a year and was originally stocked with Carp to one pound, roach to 6 ounces, small tench and a lot of skimmer bream.
I planned to fish two lines, one 3 metres from the bank beyond a bed of lilies and the other at 10 metres.
The 3 metre line was 3 feet deep while the 10 metre line was 5 feet deep.
Rigs were:- 3 metre - 10 elastic, 5 pound main, 3 lb hook to size 16, 10 metre - 16 elastic, 5 pound main to 3 lb hook size 16. (I haven’t got two tops with 10 elastic unfortunately. Bait was the standard caster and worm approach.
After setting up I cupped in two balls of groundbait on both lines with a cup of casters, maggot and sweetcorn.
I thought I would fish the 10 metre line first and shipped out, I didn’t even have chance to get settled when the float rocketed away and after a short fight a 4lb mirror carp was being released back into the lake. Good start.
Alternating between the two swims I landed 10 carp between 1 and 4 pound with a lot of roach and skimmers.
About 2 o clock the skies looked ominous so I packed up, just in time as it happened cos as I had just loaded the car the heavens opened. Still a pleasant session. Now I am looking forward to Old Bury Hill on Friday, and hopefully Springwater Lakes near Lampeter next Sunday. (This is a new location I am giving a try – they allow tents and night fishing so I thought it would be worth a look.)

Sounds like a nice session Geoff, Lets hope for some more action like that on Friday. Mook you're a lucky lad,i've never seen an otter in the wild as yet. That alone would have made my day.
