i think it may have been posted before but well worth a look,in the days when the rods were thicker than todays poles ,hardly a tackle sponsors name in sight and the dress code was a little more relaxed but these lads could fish a bit

One angling journalist, fishing the match, was sat on a large bait bucket! Brilliant, when these guys were fishing that match, my own tackle was all top flight stuff lol

thank goodness for carbon fibre. I don't think I could hold a 13ft glass rod all day these days...

thanks for posting, great nostalgia !

Those were the days.....

I fished competitions with 2 set ups..... an ABU Mk6 with a ABU 506, then a 9ft rod with screw in quiver tip and a Mitchell Match. A basket to sit on, although you needed a foam cushion to avoid 'basket bum'.
A little later I bought a 9 metre (or 26ft as advertised) fibreglass pole..... oh boy, that was heavy after a couple of hours... lol

I was sea fishing in those days, but it brought back some memories - from the fibreglass to the haircuts. In those days there was less technology, but the skill levels were proportionately greater. Maybe there is a moral in there somewhere.

nostalgia.........it's not what it was

I'm more times revised than revisited as much of the gear they're using there has more appeal to me now than my modern gear

When I first started fishing matches in the early 1970’s I had a two rod set up, an Apollo Taper Flash (reckoned to be the dogs danglies in those days) twinned with an Abu 505 and a 9' 6" Milbro ledger rod with a screw attachment on the tip ring for a swing tip, coupled with a Mitchell 300. I sat on an Efgeeco “Major” seatbox that weighed a ton empty, let alone with anything in it. With a couple f pints of maggots, a pint of hemp, a bag of Pomenteg groundbait and 20 No. 6 tipped you were ready to go.

With a mullet haircut, tank top and turned down wellies I must have looked a right plonker

The rods (and the hair) are long gone, but the reels are still going strong.

They were good old days but fishing has improved for the better. Just look at there nice soft basket at the weight in! and only once did I see a landing net being used.

How do the fish know when you pick up your flask!

Having watched this a couple times now, it makes me think, how many of us would now approach that river armed with a gallon of maggots to target the roach and bream???

Strangely enough it won't play on my work computer either
I know its blocked in Germany, so presumably it's 'cos I work for a company that has German offices - you'll have to wait until you get home - and yeah it is me - on the banks of the Erne at Crom Castle.
