Hi,
Went to Bentley Pool for the first time yesterday, the pool looked great. The 6 pairs of Canadian Geese and 2 farm geese that spent the day fighting and chasing each other all round the lake were a bit irritating however.
Got there early and as it was warm and overcast I thought we had a good chance of a tench or two. Both me and Tnotty set up with feeder and a float rod for the margins. Unfortunately apart from one solitary bite which I missed we didn't catch anything all morning.
Tried a range of baits, sweetcorn, maggotts, meet, worms, nothing! In the conditions I would have expected some roach up in the water on maggott at least!
Spotted 5 or 6 really big carp crusing on the surface in the sun but apart from that not a sign of any other fishy activity. Was beginning to think that there were no fish in it when tnotty picked up the bream below on the waggler with maggott, 6lb 4oz. Pretty much straight after I had another bream to over 5lb on feeder with corn.
So didn't blank at least. Are there any small fish in this water? Just odd that there were no signs at all. Suggested tactics, bait, pegs would be much appreciated.

Nice Bream, I will have to give Bentleys another go, it is a bit soul destroying fishing when you can't get a bit even on maggot though I must admit which is why I have been very reluctant to go back on here.
Incidentally bentleys is a water I would absolutely love to nightfish, great location and potential so long as they don't fill it with carp to hinder the growth of the Tench and Bream.

just got back from fishing Bentley pool, on arrival there at 6.30 there was already one guy fishing down the far end on the dam wall, so l set up opposite the island and fished the method. caught a couple of trees straight away but lost them both along with my method feeders oops. had been fishing about 15 mins when l had the slightest of bites which l lifted into and the fish on the other end was not very happy and stormed off towards the deep water. l was only fishing 4lb line so had to take things easy but l won the battle and a beautiful conditioned common carp of just over 13lb came to the net. shortly afterwards l had a tench of 4lb, followed by a nice bream just over 6lb. the next fish l had on was a good tench but the hook pulled just as it was coming to the net, l was not best pleased. after this fish it went quiet for a while apart from a couple of missed bites. l had one more tench then nothing till 1pm when l latched into another carp but this one was not messing about and we soon parted company and that was the last of the days action. the other guy l mentioned just had the one tench, and a couple who arrived mid morning had'nt had a bite when l left. this place is very frustrating but very rewarding when it comes right. not fussy on the five gates you have to go through. no sign of any small fish but then again its not a water that l travel to in search of them. l will be back there again soon. |

Despite a very slow day i have to say Bentleys has to be the best lake I've visited of the BMAC waters. Its a decent size, nice and mature and in a great location away from any main roads or motorways. I'm not too disappointed that the day was hard going, I'm just happy to have been put at a new location and the PB bream was a nice bonus
.... Sorry Nutmeg... only just seen your PM, and now read your post, looks like you had a decent day.
Will definatley be making another trip as soon as i can maybe for an evening session this time as a few people have mentioned it fishes better late on.
Totally agree this would be a great location for a night permit water.
At least the tadpoles had a good feed on my feeder mix!

Wonder if Danny Fairbrass would be interested in the rod rest I invented and branded during a temporary move to a different swim??

| I got in from a short session at Bentleys only an hour ago (but it's an hours drive from my house). First time I've ever been, and my mate and I were quite prepared to blank, having heard it can be a difficult water. Anyway, my mate Lee was fishing feeder towards the island, and he waited about an hour for his first, and last, bite. He didn't mind though as he landed a 6lb 4oz bream, smashing his PB. I stuck to my method, which was lift method close to some lilly pads, about a rod length out, fishing corn on the hook, over corn hemp and dead maggots. It was about 2 hours in when I got my first bite, which resulted in my tackle being wrapped around the tree above my head. Half hour later the float disappeared and I landed a 3lb 12oz tench. Lovely, unmarked fish. Within 5 mins of putting back in I had a classic lift bite, which saw me net another tinka of about 2 - 2.5lb, then about 20 mins later a really delicate, slow bite (I couldn't decide whether to strike, so I did) connected me to a crazy baby tench of about a pound. It actually leapt about a foot from the water at one point during the fight! After this we packed up, cos the temperature had plummeted and it was getting dark quickly. Great place. I'll be going again. And on the way home I got salt and pepper chips and a jumbo sausage, which I'm currently washing down with a few cans of Stella. What an evening! |

sounds like you may have been on the same pegs that both me and NickMac started out on. The lilly pads looked perfect to me and i spent a good 2 hours fishing flake on the lift but never even saw a sign of tench.
Did you see any fizzing or was it just a bite out of the blue?
The bream i eventually did pick up came from the narrow side of the lake and island, smack in the middle of the water.
Will be back there soon for another session. Its about an hour away for me(but was only 40mins at 5am wednesday morning with no traffic on the road!

Blanked today at Bentleys!!!!!
Arrived at 7.00am full of enthusiasm after reading the recent reports and headed for the narrow side of the island and found a good looking peg. I alternated between method feeder with corn close to the island and pole fished next to some lilies under an overhanging tree with maggot, caster & corn on the hook. Not a single bite, and no sign of fish moving anywhere on the pool, the main entertainment was watching the Canada Geese chasing each other around.
Two other blokes fished the far end of the pool but also didn't have a bite between them.
The conditions looked good, not sure why they didn't feed, maybe the change in the weather!!! ' ' Not sure when I will be back |

decided to give Bentley another go today as Matt could not make it, l arrived shortly before 7am this morning and the car park was empty so was quite pleased as l could have first choice of any peg. set up on the same peg l fished the last time l came opposite the small island. again today l was going to fish the method with a home made method mix with the hook bait being simple jolly green giant corn hair rigged. the geese were again in residence but today there were approx 8 native geese and the same number of canadian geese so lots of squabbles and noise all day long. it took me nearly an hour before my first bite and this resulted in a nicely conditioned tench around the 4lb mark so at least l was not going to blank today which l was worried about after reading some previous posts here. about twenty minutes later l was into my second tench of the session but it was apparent that this was a better fish as it was not happy coming to the surface and a couple of times it sent the clutch into overdrive as it tried to make its wy back to its watery home. the fight though was soon won and a female tech in great condition brought the scales down to exactly 5lb 15oz my best so far this year. after this the place went dead and it was nearly lunch time before l got my next and what turned out to be my final fish of the day another tench of approx 4lb. l fished on till nearly 4oclock but apart from a couple of small knocks l had no more bites, and also l had the lake to myself for the whole day. l saw no signs at all of any small fish or fry in the margins or anywhere. two carp did launch themselves into the air during the day and also when the sun came out there were a couple of carp just below the surface on the prowl. although this venue can be very frustrating l do enjoy it here as the rewards can be there if your willing to wait, its probably the only lake l dont actually mind blanking on. l have sent Matt a couple of pics from today so hopefully he will post them up on here for me sometime later, including a silly trophy shot like Matt likes with the fish held out at arms length lol . |

| nice photos, when i fished there i caught 3 tench and it went quiet, then i cast 2m short of the island instead of tight too it, and the tench were there i think they just backed of the noise of the feeder, it pays to cast around.. |
