Tuesday 25th Feb - White Springs near Swansea on the match pool.

Fishing from right to left - Dai Fish, Nick, Geoff,me,Any excuse, Brian and Paul (2 Swansea lads whose net names I dont know)

The venue is a new one to me but one that I heard and read a lot about as many of the boys that go to Howard Greens shop fish the matches there. So I thought this is an out and out pole job which was my down fall on the day.

So I started at around 10 to 11 metres as the peg started to shallow up a bit at that point - that was my pellet line. I was hoping to get around 40 to 50lb so fed a maggot line at some 6 metres.

I noticed Any Excuse, Brian and Paul setting up wagglers but I was confident of what I was doing so stuck with the game plan.

Anyway being a tight git I only had pellet and 1/2 pint of maggot with me so I was going to make it work - so I thought.

I thought I fished the pole quite well - unfortunately, it was the wrong method.

Paul had 22lb on the waggler, Brain 18lb on the same. Any excuse 18lb but would have had top weight but had to leave early. Dai and Geoff had around 12 to 15lb I think. Nick had 18lb which when I was watching him fished well for - though I was only watching him for 5 minutes at the end.

I had 8lb to prop up the table and received a tumping off Any excuse off the next peg.

In a perverse way I enjoyed the day - better than working - and I will go back there to practise what I learnt. I think my approach would have worked in summer but on the day was wrong. I will go back soon to correct what was done wrong. Still a good day out in the company of good boys and tidy anglers.

See at 7 oaks - cant fish it but will come over for a a natter later on in the afternoon

Cheers Chris, like you i've not been there before, and I should have set up a waggler rod or not been so lazy and got the rest of my pole out (16Mtrs) to reach the island, as Dai Fish was taking carp on the feeder from close to the island. I did have a nice shoal of skimmer bream at about 9mtrs and they became my main quarry, so i potted in groundbait and sqatt and held the fish there. I did take a few carp amoung my catch, and with hindsight had i fed a line for the waggler should have been able to break 30lb for the day.

I ventured to Bittercoldwell lake today, having read in MD somewhere that it was still fishing after a fashion.

I haven't been there since I was knee high to a grasshopper, funny how it looked so big all that time ago, yet now it just looks like a nice sized lake.
Very well stocked, I believe.

Managed a few roach and a Rudd, saw a few small carp caught.
Not bad as it was nearly all iced over when I got there at about 10.30.
They were taking the maggots on the drop!!

Worth a go again I feel...

hey chris,
i popped in there today to see if anyone was fishing there,
i didn't get out of the car but could see some people on the bank where the car park was, this was about 12-30.
by the looks of it this was the only bank that was fishable due to the ice.
the roadside bank usually fishes the best, this is the nearest lake to my house i only live 5 mins away in the car, let me know if you're planning another visit there and i'll pop in and say hello.

how deep !!!!!

Sunday......02.00 (A.M) ooooooeer!

Susie Q and myself set off on the long drive (200 miles) South.

Target.....Buscot, on the Upper Thames to meet up with, Sapachris, Beebs, NoPhinFish, and j-s.

Also a Non-Maggotdrowner (yet) my mate who happened to be staying with a friend at R.A.F. Brize-Norton.

05.00 Sue and myself arrive at Buscot, I had been working till turned midnight Saturday and set off to Buscot after loading the car, so to say I was a little bit (cream crackered) was O.K.
Set the mobile to wake me at 06.30, then followed a general MAYHEM of text messages and phone calls, from NoPhinFish, and Sapachris.

NoPhin called just to let me know "The Boys" were at Farringdon and would be there shortly.
Sapachris on the other hand (so keen to get there) drove past Buscot in either direction ( I think), so after talking him in "to land" !!
we all met in the car park, the usuall early morning pleasantries were exchanged and we drove up to the weir.
Bitter cold !! Unloaded the vehicles at the top of the lane and the cars then had to go back to the car park, that does spoil things a bit as it is quite a trek back up to the river (with Moon Boots on)
they are definately not made for walking in !!

The River looked in fine fettle, clearish, nice steady flow, and normal winter level.
We were all eager to get stuck in.
Beebs was the first to "connect" with a pike on one of his two paternostered dead bait set ups.

Beebs in one of his favourite poses (looking into Esox's gob.)

It was rather "slow" and a good hour passed before we saw any more action, which came as a 9.25 lb Pike from my mate Bob who isn't a maggotdrowner, didn't need points for the fish race and was disgusted with me for not taking any pictures of "HIS" pike.
That one took a "laid on" Lamprey section.

Meanwhile, a mobile call from Sapachris who was further down river declares that he has just landed a Rainbow Trout of about 5.5 lb.
Nice one Chris.
Susie Q is steadily whipping out the bleak and small roach, happy as Larry, with double red !!

I had NO RUNS at all on my Pike rods, which did seem strange as on arrival at the watersedge I watched a "jack" feeding on small silvers just below the lock gates, and there was quite a bit of surface action going on.
I put out a float rod with a dendrobena on and immediately came back with a perch of about seven ounce, I thought YES, I'll stick with worm for a while..............I did.........NOTHING ELSE on worm.

So to gather a couple of points for the fish race, to make the long journey South worthwhile, I went on single red, hey presto, couldn't get past the Blace Dace BLEAK !!

Sapachris meanwhile has had enough of the cold wind downriver and decides " a move " is called for, way up into the weirpool.

A phone call to him later for a progress report, gave the result as 3 snags. No fish.

Towards the back end of the afternoon we had a little fun watching the bleak feed on the liqiudised bread I was putting in, they were then attacked by a couple of hungry jack, that chased the bleak all over.

Beebs stuck to his battle plan, with his paternostered baits out in the edge of the flow and as daylight faded he connected with another one.

My mate Bob netting Beeb's second one for him.

Could our Steve be related to that famous Aussie "fish kisser" ??

NoPhinfish, finally got a pike at the latter end of the afternoon, Susie Q ended up with 61 mixed roach and bleak and a minnow for the fish race.
Total 4 pike, 1 Rainbow trout, 1 Perch, and loads bits, between us.

A nice day out, the weather stayed fine, would have had a lot more friendly banter but the pegs were spread apart down river.

Hope everyone got home safe and sound, we arrived back home at around midnight, after stopping for an hours "KIP" in a services.

catch you later, tight lines, dave....

If I were dyslexic I wouldn't be wearing this Cat Flap would I.

Just to add to Dave and Chris. Got to say it was a game of 3 halves. First fish came within 1/2 hour and I thought we were going to be sending out for more bait by lunchtime. But in true angling fashion, it died a dramatic death.

The fish were either not there or not having any of it. And I tried everything. Paternoster, suspended dead at all depths, laid on, you name it I tried it, but they just weren't playing ball. Never mind, got to spend most of the day chatting to Bob who is a really nice bloke and loves Dave to bits!!

Right at last knockings, my 2 rods were in spots that looked just perfect and the decision came as to which one to bring in 1st. A 50/50 choice, but I thought I'd go for the left hand one. Broke it down, packed in the quiver and turned to the 2nd one to see my float bobbing. You wouldn't have believed it 'cos I didn't! Anyway, the float moves off towaards midstream, wind down, hit it - YES!!!!! We're in!!! Anyway after a lazy 30 second fight, #2 was in the net and you could hear me shouting in Wiltshire!! What a way to end the day.

I must admit that by lunchtime, I was completely disheartened and could quite happily have gone home to sit in front of a nice warm fire, but to get one right at the end made me forget all that. A great day out, nice to meet some new faces and meet up with some old ones. Until next time........

No comment from me on my luck of the day, I think I was doing everything dreadfully wrong, legering with paste, worm, maggot - nothing. Trotting produced the only fish for me (see below)

I had my new digicam to play with and so here are some nice pics of the venue and also to show Dave I did get a little snap happy with my camera

Thursday 4th march

Local still water.

Fished a place not far from where I live that I had fished last year with dave scouse and geoffp.

Arrived at 08:00 armed with ¼ pint of red maggots and ¼ pint of casters.

Set myself up in a corner peg. To both my left and right were lots of dead reeds.

Set up was a pole, rigged with white hydro elastic, a small dibber float on .10 main line to a . 8 hooklength, finished off with a size 18 hook.

After plumbing around, I found 3 ft of water next to the reeds on my left and about 3ft 2” next to the reeds to my right.
Marked the pole with the 2 depths and decided to use the same rig on both lines.

On my left line I fed 6 maggots and 6 casters on my right.

Poured a brew, lit a fag, and baited hook with a single red maggot. I was hoping for a perch (for the fishing race) and was not disappointed, within a minute of my bait going in, my float dipped then slid away, out came a small perch, in again went a single maggot and out came another small perch.

This was repeated about 8 times with the same result each time. Every put in I was feeding 4 maggots via a kinder cup and at the same time, flicking in a couple of casters on my right hand line.

With 3 points in the bag, I decided to see if I could get myself a roach.
Swapping hookbait for a single caster, I lowered into my right hand line. Again I was feeding a couple of casters via a kinder cup and still flicking in a couple of maggots on the other line.

First put in and out came another 3 points in the shape of a small roach.

in again and another roach. After taking 10 roach I decided to swap about, in on my right with a maggot got me another perch, in on my left got me another roach.

I was quite happy catching when on my caster line, I lifted for another roach only this time I met with something a bit different and bigger, my elastic started to go a bit, something was heading for the middle of the lake, I followed it out and after a few minutes had it under control and was soon netting a common carp of about 2½lbs, cool, another 3 points.

Decided to change my rig over, I only had about an hours fishing left so thought, why not.
Swapping to a .15 main line to a .14 hooklength, 16 hook, I baited with 2 casters and lowered in, still feeding casters via the kinder cup.
My float sailed away almost as soon as it had settled, a few minutes later I was netting another common carp about the same size as the last one.
Again another 2 casters went in, after about 5-10 mins, my float dipped a bit, then again, then it sailed away, this one was a bit bigger, soon a was netting another common weighing in at just on 6½lbs.

feeling quite pleased with the last few hours, I decided to call it a day (and I was b****y freezing) I had managed to get myself over 2 dozen fish and 9 points for the fishing race.

while I was there, I got me a new fishing buddy, he sat there throughout the session, listening to me waffle on, he was even good enough to chase the ducks away for me.

Didn’t catch his name, but I called him spot.

ray.

Saturday 8.30am arrived at Woodlands. Had arranged to meet Norm in car park at 8.30am. No sight of him so rang his mobile only to be told he was already on the lake. ( Gave me false time so he could get best peg. ) I joined him and set up. The fishing was constant. Norm ending up with 100 fish myself 104. ( I had a couple of nice mirror carp and a few nice skimmers amongst mine so I recon I beat him despite his choice of peg .Anyway it was a good day again and well worth the visit.

one of my skimmers.
